A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Sinicization Of Marxism And Modernization Of The Chinese National Spirit(Chapter 6)

As the theoretical basis and guiding ideology of the Communist Party of China in running state,Marxism occupies a pivotal position in the field of Chinese ideology.Besides,the Chinese national spirit has been the essence of the wisdom of the Chinese nation for thousands of years,and its promotion and dissemination are fairly significant.The translation of the related topics can provide reference for foreign readers.The academic monograph Sinicization of Marxism and Modernization of the Chinese National Spirit systematically and comprehensively describes the specific achievements of sinicization of Marxism as well as the inheritance and development of the Chinese national spirit by the Chinese communists in different historical periods.This book was selected as "Chinese Academic Works Translation Project" in 2018.The author’s translation material is excerpted from this academic work.Specifically,it is Chapter Six of this book and mainly expounds closely internal relationship between the development of contemporary discursive power of Marxist ideology and the promotion of cultural soft power of the Chinese nation from the cultural perspective.There exists many terminologies on politic,economy,culture and policy in the source text,it is an imperative material for people to understand the Chinese national spirit and localized Marxism but there is no English publication of it so far.Thus,it makes sense to translate the book Sinicization of Marxism and Modernization of the Chinese National Spirit.As an expressive text,the source text is characterized with sensitivity,authenticity and solemnity.It is these characteristics that hinder the author from using certain solutions and ideas of translating literary texts to translate the source text.Some sentences and paragraphs with implicit or postponed subject,culture-loaded words and quotation of classical Chinese accordingly are the main difficulties and obstacles to the translator.According to the guidance of Skopos Theory and the requirements of the author practice,some translation methods such as literal translation with notes,transliteration with notes,conversion and paraphrase plus annotation in brackets are applied in the translation by the author.And some other methods including amplification and omission,converting the part of speech and adding auxiliary words are also adopted in accordance with specific difficulties in the translation.After successful accomplishment of the translation project,the author’s grammatical,linguistic and pragmatic competences have been improved to some extent.And in the process of reconciling correspondence between the source text and the target text,the author has more comprehension and deeper insight into localized Marxism and profound national spirit.Also,in this process,the author realized that translating a word or sentence involves translating more than just the word or sentence itself but involves specific contexts.Finally,inspired by the translation practice,the author hopes that formal beauty and some sophisticated rhetorical devices of the Chinese culture can be remained better in her future translation practice through further studying and learning both Chinese and English.
