A Study On Politeness Strategy Of Consecutive Interpreting In Press Conference

In 1978,Brown and Levinson first proposed politeness strategy.The use of politeness strategy can enhance the acceptability of utterances and make expressions more euphemistic.In the press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,the spokesman’s speech is representative of the state’s position.Therefore,the interpreter’s proper use of politeness strategy in the press conference can make the target language polite and dignified with the aim to maintain the face of all parties.This thesis analyzes the implementation of politeness strategy in interpreting from the perspective of face theory through the collection of the interpreting of press conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2020.The purpose of this study is to answer two questions.Firstly,in diplomatic interpreting,what are the frequency of politeness strategy and linguistic markers,and what texts are they distributed in?Secondly,how to apply politeness strategy in the target language of diplomatic interpreting by using language devices?The author builds a corpus,uses Tmxmall and AntConc 3.5.8 to study the frequency of politeness strategy and linguistic markers.Then,through the qualitative analysis of the interpreting materials,this thesis studies the specific application of politeness strategy in interpreting.Through the analysis,it can be found that politeness strategy is frequently used in diplomatic interpreting.Firstly,positive politeness is the most commonly applied.And the number of negative politeness application is the second.While"do not do the face-threatening acts" is not used,so the number is limited.In terms of linguistic markers,minimize the imposition,using hedge and use in-group identify markers are the most frequently used.Secondly,in terms of specific application,the interpreter implements politeness strategy by using politeness tools such as seek consistent expression,bald on record and use rhetorical questions.Furthermore,the author also finds that due to the formality of the source language,the use of politeness strategy is also limited,such as joke,overstate and be ironic are hardly seen in interpreting.Compared with the previous studies on politeness strategy in interpreting,the innovation of this study is that based on face theory,this thesis makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis on the politeness strategy and linguistic markers used by interpreters in interpreting,and analyzes their frequency and specific application.Simultaneously,the weightiness of face-threatening acts is introduced in the research process,so that the study can help the interpreter to define the bias of target language when the face threat occurs between the speaker and the reporter.However,due to the complexity of the classification of politeness strategy and the limited scale of the corpus,further research can be carried out continuously.
