This research taking The Lore of Cathay as the research object, which is wrote by the 19th-century American Sinologist Ding Weiliang, from the perspective of cross-cultural communication,to study the cross-cultural communication conflicts between China and the United States embodied in The Lore of Cathay in the 19th century, and Investigates the historical continuation of Sino-US cross-cultural communication conflicts in Sino-US cross-cultural communication in The Lore of Cathay, and provides reference and inspiration for current Sino-US cross-cultural communication activities. The research framework starts from the three aspects:cultural stereotypes, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism embodied in The Lore of Cathay. The concepts of these three aspects are interrelated. From the perspective of cultural stereotypes, the American society in the 19th century showed cultural stereotypes in the customs and culture of Chinese people’s daily improvisation of poems and in the factual culture as Chinese opera, history and historiography narrative art. There are internal reasons as well as external reasons. The extreme development of cultural stereotypes that deviates from objective has produced the tendency of "ethnocentrism".On the basis of cultural stereotypes, this research further analyzes the performance of ethnocentrism embodied in The Lore of Cathay. From the perspective of cultural.relativism,The Lore of Cathay commendably show the tendency of cultural relativism.Due to the long-term close contacts with the Chinese bureaucratic class and the in-depth understanding and objective textual research of Chinese culture,Ding Weiliang has obtained a relatively clear understanding in the cross-cultural communication activities between China and the United States. He subjectively tried to eliminate the prejudice of American society against China in the past, and objectively adjusted the cross-cultural communication conflicts between China and the United States.Although The Lore of Cathay records the conflicts of Sino-American cross-cultural communication more than 100 years ago,due to the historical continuity of American culture, the cultural stereotypes of factual culture such as Chinese opera and history still remain in the mind of many Americans. Therefore, the research has a certain reference and warning effect on the cross-cultural communication activities of Sino-American factual culture and the American-related intercultural communication activities of Chinese teachers.
