A Study On The English Translation Of Fusang From The Perspective Of The Feminist Translation Theory

The feminist translation theory breaks up the traditional binary opposition,resists male-dominated languages,and strives to lift the position of women in translation.The main content of the feminist translation theory includes feminist translation themes and feminist translation strategies.Feminist translation themes include the resistance to male suppression,the redefinition of "fidelity",the stress on the translator’s subjectivity and so on.Feminist translation strategies include prefacing and footnoting,supplementing and hijacking.These translation themes and translation strategies collectively reflect the translator’s feminist consciousness,that is,the core idea of the feminist translation theory:to improve the status of women and achieve gender equality in the translation in translation.This thesis analyzes the English translation of Fusang from the perspective of the feminist translation theory,the author of the thesis finds that the translator’s feminist consciousness is embodied in deletions,supplements and rewritings.The translator’s image translation of the main characters in Fusang shows that the translator has followed the feminist translation themes in the translation.For example,deletions of Chris’ manhood and masculinity reflects the translator’s resistance to male suppression;the translator’s extensive deletions of Fusang’s femininity and sexuality reflects the redefinition of "fidelity";the translator maintains the masculinity and mystery of Da Yong,which reflects the translator’s subjectivity.Meanwhile,the English translation of Fusang,which also embodies feminist translation strategies like supplementing and hijacking.For example,the strategy of supplementing covers levels of phrases,sentences and cultures;the strategy of hijacking covers levels of vocabularies,sentences and paragraphs.After systematic analysis,the author finds that,on the one hand,the translator abides by the traditional feminist translation themes and adopts the traditional feminist translation strategies to tackle different feminist writings between the East and the West;on the other hand,the translator gives full play to her creativity--both explicit and implicit ways are used in the translation--which reflects the translator’s inheritance and innovation of the feminist translation theory.It is hoped that this thesis can provide a reference for the translation of similar texts and attract more attention to the feminist writing and translation.
