China’s interpreting research emerged from 1990s,and its number grew fast in the beginning of the 21st century.Among these studies,a majority of them focused on exclusive topics, thus interdisciplinary research on interpreting was encouraged, and research on personality traits has received much attention.Personality traits are relatively stable factors that affect individuals’study or work, and research has proven that personality traits also affect interpreting performance(Shaw and Hughes,2006).As interdisciplinary studies developed, achievement motivation has gradually become a research focus. The role of achievement motivation in affecting interpreting learning and performance has also been proved(Timarová and Salaets,201 1).Research on the relationship between personality traits or achievement motivation and interpreting learning was well-established,but the relationship between trainee interpreters’ personality traits and achievement motivation remains under-explored.It is this study’s aim to investigate the relationship between Big Five personality traits and moti vational orientations as defined by the Self-worth theory of achievement motivation among trainee interpreters.50 trainee interpreters participated in this study.Through quantitative analyses on the data obtained, the research came to the following conclusions.Among the five personality traits, agreeableness appeared to be the dominant personality trait. In terms of motivational orientation, successapproaching had a higher mean score than that of failure-avoiding,and number of participants who were highly success-approaching and failure-avoiding was similar to the number of participants who were low in success orientation and failure-avoiding.This study did not find statistically significant relationship between trainee interpreters’personality traits and motivational orientations.Based on the results, implications for interpreting teaching and learning were offered, and suggestions for future research were put forward.
