A Study On The English References To “中国人民解放军” In Academic Field

Studying the English translation of“中国人民解放军”is of indisputable significance for understanding the image of our army and the dissemination of its image abroad.Most of studies on the translation of“中国人民解放军”into English so far are from the angles of political and journalistic texts,and the influence and contribution of academic circles to the translation of military terms are largely ignored.Searches found that People’s Liberation Army,armed forces of China and the Chinese Military are the top three English translations appeared in journals in the EBSCO database.The author extracts the abstracts of articles in the database containing the above-mentioned English translations and establishes a small mono-language corpus.The study is done in three parts.In the first part,according to the type of source texts,the English translations of“中国人民解放军”mostly appear in medical journals,political journals and other academic journals.The author discusses the use of its English translations in the above three kinds of texts.In the second part,the author uses the corpus research means to study the collocation of the People’s Liberation Army,armed forces of China and the Chinese Military--three English translations of“中国人民解放军”under the guidance of critical discourse analysis.In the third part,from the perspective of semantic prosody,the author studies the negative,positive and neutral semantic prosody ratio and the deep reasons behind the three English translations of“中国人民解放军”.Finally,according to the above research,the author makes the conclusion of the image of“中国人民解放军”in academic circles and the acceptance of its English translations,and then put forward a rather proper English translation of it which is more in line with the positive image of our army.
