Promoting adolescent health is an important part of China’s implementation of the "Healthy China" strategy. In recent years, the Party Central Committee and the State Council have attached great importance to the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents.According to data released by the National Health Commission, the overall myopia rate of children and adolescents in China in 2020 was 52.7%.Primary and middle school stages have become key age groups for myopia prevention and control in China.Myopia is preventable, controllable and untreatable. It is also an important factor for effective prevention and control of myopia to protect the eyesight health of children and adolescents, spread the concept of "prevention first" for myopia prevention and control, and improve the whole society’s awareness of the harm of myopia. This article selects three representative domestic education, public health, and comprehensive newspapers,China Education Daily,Health News, and People’s Daily,to sample their reports on myopia in children and adolescents from 2016 to 2022.By using various research methods to study the situation of three newspapers in terms of report quantity, report length, report genre, report source, report layout, report tendency, etc.,and then using the six elements of the Health Belief Model(HBM)to construct an analysis category,a deeper analysis of the report content of the three newspapers is conducted.Through comparative analysis, this study aims to explore the differences and common patterns in the reporting of myopia prevention and control in children and adolescents in Chinese newspapers and media, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the quality of myopia prevention and control reporting.Research has found that more than 90% of the reports on myopia issues in children and adolescents by China Education Daily,Health News, and People’s Daily include HBM elements, with the most emphasis on self-efficacy and action clues, which are beneficial for the audience to adopt healthy behaviors for myopia prevention and control. The four elements of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers are less commonly used. Finally, combining the basic category analysis and HBM element analysis,it was found that the media had insufficient use of perceived severity, lack of attention to mental health issues, insufficient perceived benefits, affecting individuals to adopt healthy behaviors, weak audience participation, and insufficient reporting interest when reporting myopia in children and adolescents. It was also suggested to add appropriate fear demands to promote healthy behaviors Strengthen the application of perceived benefits to enhance individual confidence in action, cleverly use QR code news to enhance the fun of reporting, and other optimization suggestions.
