Research On Typology Photography Based On Wuhan Industrial Heritage

Wuhan is one of the birthplaces of China’s modern industry,and its modern history is a microcosm of the country’s industrial modernization process.With its unique geographical location and national strategic layout,Wuhan has a rich and systematic industrial system.With the social transformation and development,most of these enterprises have been eliminated and transformed,leaving behind a large industrial heritage.They are not only the product of urban development,but also witness the rise and fall of cities,and are valuable material and spiritual wealth.Now,however,society lacks a sense of the value it carries and many industrial heritage sites have been damaged.Iron and steel have been an important component and characteristic industry of Wuhan’s industry.Wuhan Iron and Steel Company is a super large iron and steel enterprise established during the "First Five Year Plan" period.Now,more than 60 years later,the former Wuhan Iron and Steel Group has merged with Baosteel,but the old blast furnaces,old family quarters and other buildings have survived.They have a special aesthetic style of that era,chronicling the struggle and entrepreneurial history of Chinese workers in that era,becoming a highly representative industrial heritage of value and meaning.Documentary photography aims to document real life,depicting and documenting objective and real-life processes and moments that occur between people and their environment through footage and images.As the times have advanced,the expressive techniques of documentary photography have evolved towards diversity.Typographical photography is a category of documentary photography.By photographing objects of the same type,classifying and combining them according to their characteristics,studying their development and interrelations,and summing up and summarizing the general features of objects in a comprehensive way,it not only preserves the object’s objective authenticity,but also facilitates the identification of laws and relations between objects.Documentary photography of Wuhan’s industrial heritage uses photography as an important means of preserving those cultural heritage,both tangible and intangible.Therefore,applying typographic photography to the protection of Wuhan’s industrial heritage is a new documentary approach to industrial heritage protection.A single piece or group of works alone cannot fully document the style and characteristics of Wuhan’s industrial heritage.The application of typographic photography,therefore,merely compensates for this deficiency.It presents the current situation and characteristics of Wuhan’s industrial heritage through comprehensive summaries and summaries.This study used a combination of research methods including literature studies,fieldwork,case studies,and qualitative interviews.The study was conducted in five parts.The first part is an introduction.The research content and methodology of this paper was established by conducting a literature search and collection to classify domestic and international research trends;The second section elaborates on the relevant theories of documentary and typological photography and analyzes the basic concepts,characteristics and forms of expression of documentary and typological photography;The third part is to understand Wuhan’s industrial heritage and analyze its concepts,types,values and conservation significance;The fourth section explores the application of typographic photography to the industrial heritage of Wuhan through a combination of typographic photography and the industrial heritage of Wuhan;The fifth section focuses on the creative practices of the former Wuhan Iron and Steel Plant,based on the concept and manifestation of typographic photography.Using qualitative research methods such as holistic conception and semi-structured interviews,the former Wuhan Iron and Steel Plant was divided into two categories: industrial area and living area,with the living area being the focus of the filming.Classified by age,facility function,architectural features,and other types,and displayed in a typological manner through the juxtaposition of multiple maps.The aim of this study is to expand the expression of documentary photography in Wuhan’s industrial heritage,record Wuhan’s industrial heritage with typographical photography,and promote typographical photography;Study and analyze typographic photography as a new way to document and preserve Wuhan’s industrial heritage.
