The relationship between ancient people and nature is very close. For a long time, people have been pursuing the poetic way of coexistence with nature. In the Song Dynasty, the garden gradually became secularized and began to combine with the living room.Living room, courtyard and garden together form the house-garden residence.Environment and human settlements form a more intimate relationship. This paper analyzes the construction of human settlements from three dimensions: layout, building and interior. To explore the hierarchical relationship between house-garden residence and environment in the Southern Song Dynasty, and explores the internal and external conversion pattern of house-garden residence at every layer. The lack of existing residential buildings in the Southern Song Dynasty makes painting an important material to explore the appearance of the living rooms and gardens at that time. The court painters were the main force of outstanding landscape painting at that time. The style of the court painting was mature in the Southern Song Dynasty, with had complete program, unified style and high realism.Small landscape painting flourished in the Southern Song Dynasty.Compared with panoramic landscape painting, its scene was closer to the house-garden residence in reality, the painter’s mentality was more common, and the perspective went deep into the small woodwork and furniture scale, which allowed the viewer to be immersed in the scene. Therefore,it is taken as the research object of this article. This paper analyzes the space structure, the house itself, and the building components, and summarizes the conversion pattern between the house-garden residence and the environment through the comparison of appearance, function and use.Site analysis diagram and interior elevation diagram were used to assist the analysis. The main body of the text contains two to five chapters. The second chapter starts from the boundary form of house-garden residence and analyzes the patterns of bringing in landscape through the layout. The third chapter starts from the boundary form of indoor and outdoor and analyzes the pattern of transition from indoor to outdoor through the inner and outer switching space and the enclosure system. The fourth chapter starts from mutual spacial and behavioral pattern of indoor and outdoor.Analyze similar similar scene and landscape setting patterns and visual interrelation of indoor and outdoor. The last chapter summarizes the hierarchical relationship between the house-garden residence and the environment in the Southern Song Dynasty, and analyzes the relationship and similarity between the internal and external conversion patterns of each layer of the house-garden residence.Existing studies on the living rooms of the Southern Song Dynasty ignore the differences between the two Song dynasties, pay insufficient attention to the Southern Song Dynasty, and discuss the living rooms and gardens in different contexts. In the unified architectural context, this paper analyzes the transition between house-garden and environment and the interaction between human and environment, providing supplementary data for the study of human settlements in the Southern Song Dynasty. This paper concludes that the house garden in the Southern Song Dynasty was transformed into the environment through three layers:living room, courtyard and garden, and formed a multi-layer transformation relationship with the environment through the continuity and similarity of the conversion pattern of each layer. The house-garden residence in the Southern Song Dynasty embodies the active adjustment and creation when faces environmental changes, and the pursuit of the humanistic color and natural poetry of the human settlement, which inspired the construction of the house-garden residence in later generations.
