China’s population is aging, and traditional neighborhoods have become one of the most densely populated spaces in the city, characterized by advanced ageing,a large number of empty nesters, and a high dependency on support.Older people in neighborhoods are in urgent need of support outside of their families, but are unwilling to move away from their familiar relationships and living environment. In response to such a contradiction, the timely introduction of the concept of mutual assistance in the neighborhood and the development of elderly care services using the original social network of acquaintances and housing has the characteristics of low investment and high return, which can provide a new idea and a new path for the elderly care model in China. The thesis consists of five parts. In the first part,by discussing the background of the study, interpreting the concepts of traditional neighborhood and neighborhood mutual retirement with literature, and sorting out the relevant theoretical foundation, the feasibility of neighborhood mutual retirement is summarized from three aspects:historical tradition, practical foundation and emotional identity. In the second part, through field research in Suzhou’s traditional neighborhoods,we propose a series of existing problems of aging in Suzhou’s traditional neighborhoods, such as scale limitation, lack of aging functions, and lack of aging-friendly facilities, from two dimensions of spatial status and residents’willingness and needs for aging, combined with questionnaire information. In the third part,we summarize the practical experience of spatial renewal of traditional neighborhoods by combining the typical cases of mutual help of neighbors in Shanghai and Japan. In the fourth part, the theoretical research and design cases are combined to summarize the four spatial renewal design principles of "ageing appropriateness, original appearance, localization, and sustainable development",and propose three spatial renewal strategies of"overall spatial organization and function setting layout, basic spatial renewal, and neighborhood operation optimization" for traditional neighborhoods."The spatial renewal strategy is proposed in three aspects. In the fifth part, the design of Petalian Lane in Suzhou Daoqian Street area is taken as the object of design practice, and the spatial organization of the neighborhood is reconstructed based on the concept of mutual help of neighbors in old age,and the design and construction of "plug-in" is proposed, using a series of "plug-ins" such as space, function, greening, facilities, memory and industry to optimize the traditional neighborhood space. We propose a series of "plug-in" design and construction, using space, function, greenery, facilities, memory, industry and other"plug-ins" to optimize and update traditional neighborhood space. It is hoped that it can provide reference and reference for the further improvement of the concept of mutual assistance in the neighborhood and the spatial renewal of the traditional neighborhoods in China, and also provide effective new ideas for the exploration of the traditional neighborhoods in order to promote the sustainable development of the society in the context of aging.
