The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal,as a world cultural heritage,is a carrier for the dissemination of excellent Chinese traditional culture. The national departments at all levels have made relevant plans and policies for the excavation, protection and inheritance of the canal culture, and Liaocheng’s historical and cultural heritage and the protection of urban history and culture are mixed, for which Liaocheng has carried out a series of rectification measures. The Chinese classical garden literature depicts the city’s historical landscape, landscape environment, folk customs, religious beliefs and other landscape and regional culture with inscriptions and chants. The study of the representative ancient buildings of Liaocheng will help to explore the value of Liaocheng’s cultural heritage and the city’s historical and cultural lineage, thus completing the protection and transmission of the city’s culture. In this context, this study selects Linqing City,Dongchangfu District and Yanggu County, the area through which the canal flows in the Liaocheng section, and takes the representative ancient architectural inscriptions of Liaocheng City as the research object to study the regional cultural expressions of Liaocheng, and considers the contemporary value of the inscriptions. This study clarifies the concepts and relationships between inscriptions, ancient architecture and regional culture, and provides a comprehensive review of the current status of related research.Using documentary analysis, fieldwork, diagrammatic analysis and inductive analysis, the study investigates the current state of Liaocheng’s regional environment and ancient architecture, and summarises the characteristics of representative ancient buildings in the social and contemporary contexts of the Ming and Qing dynasties.Seven representative ancient buildings were selected based on their characteristics: Linqing Canal Banknote Pass,Linqing Sheli Pagoda,Aotouji,Guangyuelou,Liaocheng Shan-Shaan Association Hall,Acheng Salt Transport Department, and Zhangqiu Shan-Shaan Association Hall, and were divided into building types according to their functional attributes: government office buildings, guild buildings, military buildings, and religious buildings, and the surviving inscriptions were summarised.Further classification of representative ancient buildings inscriptions: virtual literary form is divided into scenic names and poetry, physical physical form is divided into plaques, couples, stone carvings, inscriptions four categories.Based on this, the typical features of the inscriptions are summarised, including the class nature of the ritual and music culture, the realism of the social landscape of each class, and the inclusiveness between the government and the people and the regional culture. On this basis,we further explore the expression of Liaocheng’s regional culture in terms of ideological connotation, landscape construction and inner beliefs, among which the ideological situation of parallelism between Confucianism and Taoism, respect for Confucianism and Taoism, and the influence of Confucianism have given rise to the idea of special reverence for literature in various sectors of society. In terms of inner beliefs, the city’s spirit is passed on through the deification of historical figures and the transmission of the city’s special literary beliefs through literary gods and immortals. The study of representative ancient buildings in Liaocheng will eventually consider their contemporary value in the context of the construction of the Grand Canal National Cultural Park, including the protection and excavation of urban culture, the orientation of residents’ lives, the condensation of the canal landscape, and the shaping of the image of the canal city cluster.
