City is not only the result of production and life, but also affects production and life in turn, but there is always a research gap in the field of urban spatial structure. In terms of theoretical research, from the perspective of economics, the influence of space has been ignored by classical economics for a long time, until economic geography introduced the concepts of space and distance into classical economics research, and new economic geographers such as Krugman introduced the concept of agglomeration.Introduced into economic research, the concept of region and space has gradually received attention;from the perspective of geography, geographers are often keen to explore the evolution of spatial structure, while ignoring the mechanism and performance impact. There has always been a theoretical gap in the research. In urban and regional planning,as China’s urbanization level continues to improve and the process of urbanization enters a new stage, the government pays more and more attention to the optimization of spatial structure, and actively explores which spatial structure can bring high-quality and sustainable urban development.Limited by the short urbanization development time in China, there is insufficient empirical evidence for the choice of urban spatial structure, and there seems to be no unified and standard answer to the question of whether to focus on building urban centers or vigorously develop suburbs. In order to achieve high-quality urban economic development, the relationship between urban spatial structure and performance needs to be examined urgently.Technology is the foundation of a country’s prosperity, and innovation is the soul of a nation’s progress. In the report of the 19 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,it was pointed out that as China’s socialism has entered a new era,the main contradiction at this stage has also changed.Obviously,we cannot maintain a low-level,low-value-added production mode.We must continue to maintain healthy and sustainable economic growth.First of all,we must break the previous mode of economic division of labor, bid farewell to extensive and resource-dependent production methods, and must follow the path of innovative national development. It can even be seen that innovation has not only become the key to promoting its own economic development, but also may become the key to mastering the core competitiveness and leading the development trend of the times for a period of time. Therefore, innovation has gradually become one of the economic performances that the field of economics focuses on.Scholars have begun to explore the relationship between spatial structure and innovation performance, but there are still gaps in related research, and the conclusion has not yet reached a unified point of view. What kind of urban spatial structure can promote innovation? In view of this, this paper uses the urban panel data from 2001 to2016,combined with the single-center-multi-center index to measure the impact of the single-center-multi-center spatial structure on the urban innovation level, and further analyzes the single-center-multi-center spatial structure on the urban innovation level. The trend and mechanism of influence have certain significance for theoretical research on spatial structure and innovation and urban planning. This paper firstly summarizes and generalizes the laws and evolution characteristics of spatial structure by reviewing the relevant concepts of monocentricpolycentric spatial structure, and reviews previous scholars’ research on spatial structure performance. Then, this paper sorts out the spatial structure of my country’s urban area and the status quo of innovation, and finds that my country’s innovation input and innovation output are both continuously and rapidly improving, and the overall innovation capability has made a qualitative leap, but the regional innovation development has obvious differences. The eastern coast still maintains a high level of innovation input and output, and the central and western regions are catching up,gradually narrowing the innovation gap;however, from the perspective of the north and the south, the innovation gap between the north and the south is gradually expanding. The level of innovation improves slowly.Regarding the status quo of the urban spatial structure in my country, this paper measures the single-center-multi-center spatial structure of the urban area through the construction of the primacy index and the Herfindahl index of night light data in my country. As a result, from 2001 to 2016,the first degree of my country’s city region remained stable, and slightly decreased, that is,the overall spatial structure of my country’s prefecture-level cities evolved to polycentricity. This paper selects my country’s urban data from 2001 to 2016 as a sample, and constructs a city primacy index to measure the degree of urban single-center-multicenter structure through lighting data as an explanatory variable. The China Urban Innovation Index established by the Report 2017 measures the level of urban innovation and serves as an explained variable.Through empirical analysis,it is found that:(1)the primacy of the city is negatively correlated with innovation, that is,the spatial structure of the city tends to be single-center,which will inhibit innovation;on the contrary, the spatial structure of the city tends to be multi-center,which is conducive to innovation;(2)the spatial structure of the city tends to be more conducive to innovation; The impact of the single-center structure on innovation is different in different regions. From the perspective of the division of east, middle and west, when the degree of urban single-center structure increases, the spatial structure in the eastern region has the most obvious inhibitory effect on regional innovation, followed by the western region and the lowest in the central region. From the perspective of the division between the south and the north, when the degree of single center of the city area increases, the innovation of the southern cities will be more inhibited.(3)Cities of different levels also show different effects of single-center spatial structure on innovation. When the degree of single centralization of the spatial structure increases, the innovation of prefecture-level cities with lower levels will be more inhibited, while the inhibition of prefecture-level cities with higher levels will be relatively smaller.Based on this, the policy suggestion in this paper is to actively encourage urban centers that have developed to a high level to relieve their non-core functions and transfer their non-dominant and non-pillar industries to the urban periphery.Actively use policies to guide the evolution of the urban spatial structure, and use the urban multi-spatial structure as a means to achieve high-quality and innovative development of the city. The evolution of urban spatial structure should be adapted to local conditions, the order of development should be different, and the level of investment should be differentiated. The influence mechanism of unobstructed urban spatial structure on innovation, local governments should pay attention to the influence of human capital, agglomeration and urban scale in urban planning.
