Renewable energy sources like wind and sun are increasingly used in power systems to cope with the global warming. The stochastic output power with renewable generation makes it challenging to maintain stable voltage. To address this issue, the project with the thesis proposes using variable speed pump storage(VSPS)system to compensate pertinent active and reactive power for voltage fluctuation control caused by renewable energy sources or grid. This proactive control strategy makes full use of the large amplitude and fast response time of VSPS for the voltage stable control. The project aims to put forward control strategies to address voltage fluctuations caused by renewable energy output changes and by grid side fault. The doubly-fed induction machine(DFIM)will be considered as a key component of the proposed system.P-Q decoupling strategies are employed for both the grid side and rotor side converter control.Factors such as grid strength, renewable power penetration,VSPS capacity, and operating considerations such as motoring mode/generating mode will be considered in relation to voltage control. The goal is to establish a comprehensive study on VSPS’s potential in controlling grid with multiple renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar energy.
