After more than thirty years of rapid construction phase,China’s expressways have gradually entered the stock enhancement stage of high-quality development,the public demand for safe and smooth high-speed travel has become more urgent,how to maximize the expressway traffic efficiency,safety level and service level,has become a key issue concerned by the industry.The essence of traffic congestion is road bottleneck,and the key point of road bottleneck management is the orderly control of upstream traffic flow.This paper selects expressway bottlenecks as the main research object,aiming to solving the optimal selection of the upstream control range of the expressway bottleneck through the combination of management and traffic engineering,and provide scientific support for the expressway operation managers’ business of traffic congestion mitigation and smoothness.Focusing on the objective of selecting the optimal control range upstream of expressway bottlenecks,this paper focuses on the following research work.Firstly,this paper classifies expressway bottlenecks in terms of their causes,and analyzes the essential characteristics and quantitative indicators of their impact on expressway traffic flow disturbance by combining qualitative and quantitative approaches,type by type.Secondly,based on the traffic flow wave theory,the propagation characteristics of expressway bottleneck interference are fully combined with the Van aerde model,and a model for determining the interference range applicable to different expressway bottlenecks is constructed;after comparing and analyzing with the conventional control range selection methods in the industry,the preliminary judgment that the bottleneck interference range is the best control range upstream of the bottleneck is proposed.Thirdly,in order to verify the accuracy of the above judgment,an effect evaluation model that can be used for the selection of the control range upstream of the bottleneck on the expressway is constructed by applying AHP hierarchical analysis from three aspects: traffic efficiency,traffic safety and service level.Fourthly,the evaluation analysis of the upstream control range of bottlenencks is carried out with four types of typical bottlenecks of Yong-Tai-Wen Expressway as an example,which finally confirms that the above judgment is valid,that is,the disturbance range of the expressway bottleneck is the best control range upstream of the bottleneck.The core of this paper is to propose an innovative method to calculate the best control range upstream of the bottleneck on the expressway,which will help to get rid of the drawbacks of the previous bottleneck disposal plan relying only on manual experience,etc,and improve the scientific and effective disposal decision.
