Coal mine safety accidents occur frequently.Strengthening safety production management is an important means to prevent accidents from the source.Setting safety signs is one of the most commonly used methods.Coal mines use safety signs to guide and limit miners’ unsafe behaviors and reduce the incidence of safety accidents.Being able to discover and identify safety signs is the premise for miners to produce compliance behaviors, and miners’ visual cognition process of safety signs is easily affected by environmental factors and safety sign design features.Previous studies on safety signs mainly focus on visual attention, and there are relatively few studies from the perspective of visual working memory, and the special environmental factor of lighting conditions in coal mines is not considered enough. Therefore, this paper studies the differences in the impact of safety signs on miners’ visual perception under different light intensities and optimizes the design of safety signs.First, this paper sorts out the current research status of the visual recognition of safety signs and analyzes the important roles played by visual attention and visual working memory from the stage of miners’ attention and recognition of visual cognition of safety signs.Secondly, the influencing factors of the visual perception of safety signs are pointed out from the perspective of light intensity and safety sign design characteristics. Then, eye movement experiments and behavioral experiments were designed using the SMI-RED telemetry infrared eye tracker and E-prime experimental platform to study the effects of light intensity and design features of coal mine safety signs on visual attention and visual working memory. Finally, the data obtained from the experiment are analyzed, combined with the experimental conclusions and the problems existing in the use of coal mine safety signs, the optimization scheme of the design of coal mine safety signs is given, the optimization effect is verified by experiments, and measures and suggestions for the use and management of safety signs are put forward. The main conclusions of this paper are:(1)Light intensity can significantly affect the visual perception of the subjects.(2)Under different light intensities, the influence of safety sign design features on the subjects’ visual perception was significantly different.(3)Under the high and low light intensities, the triangular frame, white contrasting color, and safety signs with auxiliary text have a greater impact on the visual perception of miners.(4)Under high light intensity, the safety signs with red borders can arouse the subjects’ visual attention and visual working memory;under low light intensity, the visual perception effect of green border safety signs is better. The above conclusions provide a theoretical basis for the design optimization, use, and management of coal mine safety signs.
