The pen valued by the literati is the first of the four treasures of the literary room.The word "pen" here refers to the brush.As a unique calligraphy and painting tool in ancient times,the brush has witnessed the development of ancient culture and is a unique symbol of Chinese civilization.As an important part of brush culture,brush making technology has witnessed the historical changes of brush culture,conveyed the ideological concepts and aesthetics of ancient Chinese creation,and reflected the basic characteristics of traditional Chinese creation.Taking the brush making process as the research object and the pre-Qin to Tang dynasty as the time boundary,this paper summarizes and presents the archaeological physical materials of this period,then sorts out the literature of the brush of previous dynasties,and finally explains the development,characteristics,advantages and disadvantages of the brush making technology from the pre-Qin to the Tang dynasty.The article is divided into six parts.The first part provides a summary discussion of brush making and related research on the basis of predecessors.The second part provides an explanatory discussion of the "primitive brush" and related documents from the perspective of archaeology and philology.The third part discusses the pen-making technology of the Qin and Han dynasties from the perspective of archaeology,using relevant archaeological reports.The fourth part elaborates on the pen-making process of the Wei and Jin dynasties from the perspective of philology.The fifth part briefly expounds the scattered brushwork of the Tang and Song dynasties from the perspective of poetry.It concludes with a summary.
