The physical and chemical properties of traditional and heated cigarettes differ due to the different ways of aerosol production. At present, there are few basic studies on the aerosols of traditional and heated cigarettes in China, and there are few studies on the influence of the structural characteristics of filters on the release characteristics of aerosols. Therefore,it is necessary to further deepen the basic research on the physicochemical characteristics of smoke aerosols,to clarify the essential physicochemical differences of smoke aerosols, and to provide important data support for product marketability evaluation, new tobacco product control initiatives, and "harm reduction" risks. The purpose of this study is to establish and optimize the physical properties of smoke aerosols of traditional and heated cigarettes,as well as the measurement methods of the main chemical components and aldehydes and ketones, and to conduct an in-depth analysis of the structural characteristics of the filters that affect the aerosol release characteristics. The main research results are as follows:1.The SCS-DMS500 fast particle size spectroscopy method was established for real-time monitoring of the particle size distribution of smoke aerosols from conventional and heated cigarettes, and the primary dilution flow rate, secondary dilution ratio and ambient humidity of smoke aerosols were optimized, which can realize online testing of smoke aerosol particle size as well as smoke volume.2.A liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of aldehydes and ketones in smoke aerosols of conventional and heated cigarettes, and the sample pretreatment conditions were optimized. The recoveries, limits of quantification and RSDs of the method were also evaluated, indicating that the method is sensitive, stable and reliable, and suitable for the determination of aldehydes and ketones in the aerosol of traditional and heated cigarette smoke.3.Using the established method for the determination of traditional cigarette smoke aerosols, the particle size distribution and the release of main chemical components and aldehydes and ketones of traditional cigarette smoke aerosols with different filter ventilation rates and filter lengths were compared. The results showed that there were differences in particle size distributions of cigarettes with different filter ventilation rates and filter lengths, and the particle number concentration decreased and the median particle diameter increased with increasing filter ventilation rates and filter lengths, and the release of nicotine, propylene glycol, propanetriol and water in the total particle phase and particle phase decreased. The total release of aldehydes and ketones, especially formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, was most significantly reduced. In addition, the retention of the main chemical components and aldehydes and ketones in the smoke aerosol by the filter increased with the increase of the filter length.4.Using the established test method for heated cigarette smoke aerosols, the particle size distribution and the release of chemical components and aldehydes and ketones of heated cigarette smoke aerosols with different filter ventilation rates and filter combinations were compared. The results showed that there were differences in the particle size distribution of heated cigarette smoke with different filter ventilation rates and filter combinations. With the increase of the filter ventilation rate, the particle number concentration and volume particle number concentration in the smoke aerosol first increased and then slightly decreased, the median particle diameter and volume median diameter increased, the release of total particle phase material and nicotine and propanetriol in the particle phase material first increased and then slightly decreased, the release of propylene glycol in the particle phase material increased, and the release of water in the particle phase material and gas phase material decreased. The total release of aldehydes and ketones decreased especially formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The combination of filters also affects the physicochemical properties of the smoke aerosol. The increase in the length of the hollow section leads to an increase in the particle number and volume concentration and an increase in the release of nicotine and propylene glycol in the total particle phase and the particle phase. The increase in the length of the cooling section and acetate section leads to the decrease in the particle number concentration and volume concentration, and the decrease in the release of nicotine and propanetriol in the particle phase. The increase in the length of hollow section, cooling section and vinyl fiber section leads to the increase in the median diameter of particle number and volume, the increase in the release of propylene glycol in the particle phase and the decrease in the release of water in the gas phase and particle phase, and the decrease in the release of aldehydes and ketones, especially the decrease in formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
