As the main body of new urbanization, urban agglomeration plays an important strategic role in regional development, while urban agglomeration in the central region is in the core strategic position in the rise of the central region. Therefore, the relationship between its economy and environment is a key link in the coordinated development of the region. With the rapid advancement of industrialization and urbanization of urban agglomerations in the central region and the undertaking of industrial transfer in the eastern region,a series of environmental issues such as soil erosion, land desertification, and white pollution have also emerged. The sustainable development of its economy, resources, and environment is facing enormous challenges. Therefore, exploring the decoupling relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution in urban agglomerations in the central region and its driving factors can provide an important theoretical and practical basis for promoting high-quality economic development in the central region. This article takes the six major urban agglomerations in the central region as the research object, using methods such as entropy weight method,Tapio decoupling model, and LMDI model, analyzes the current situation and spatial characteristics of the decoupling relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution in the six major urban agglomerations in the central region, explores the driving factors of economic growth and environmental pollution decoupling, and puts forward suggestions and countermeasures. The main research results are as follows:(1)The level of decoupling between economic growth and environmental pollution in the six major urban agglomerations has generally shown a fluctuating downward trend, with decoupling gradually falling from a relatively high level dominated by strong decoupling during the "11th Five Year Plan" period to a less ideal level dominated by weak decoupling and multiple occurrences of expansionary negative decoupling during the "13th Five Year Plan" period.Specifically,Hefei urban agglomeration has achieved eight strong decoupling; The Central Plains urban agglomeration has achieved seven strong decoupling;Wuhan urban agglomeration and Changzhutan urban agglomeration have achieved five strong decoupling;Taiyuan urban agglomeration has achieved four strong decoupling and Poyang Lake Rim urban agglomeration has experienced three strong decoupling.Overall, the overall decoupling status of Hefei urban agglomeration is the best, followed by the Central Plains urban agglomeration, while the decoupling levels of Wuhan urban agglomeration,Changzhutan urban agglomeration, and the Poyang Lake Rim urban agglomeration are comparable, while the overall decoupling level of Taiyuan urban agglomeration is slightly poor due to the repeated occurrence of negative decoupling due to expansion. At the same time, using the Arc GIS spatial analysis method to analyze the spatial characteristics of the decoupling level of the six major urban agglomerations, the results show that, except for Taiyuan urban agglomerations, the overall decoupling level is higher with the provincial capital city as the center.(2)The LMDI model is used to explore the driving factors for decoupling economic growth and environmental pollution in urban agglomerations in central China, mainly from four aspects:technological level, economic effects, industrial structure effects, and population effects. The research results show that the technological level and economic effect have the greatest impact on the decoupling level of the six major urban agglomerations, but their impact on different urban agglomerations varies slightly. Finally, based on the contribution rates of the four effects, the types of driving forces for decoupling economic growth and environmental pollution in urban agglomerations are classified.Specifically,Wuhan urban agglomerations and Central Plains urban agglomerations are mainly divided into three types of driving forces:technology+industry+economy, technology+economy, and industry+economy; The urban agglomeration of Changzhutan is divided into four driving types: technology+industry+economy, technology+economy, industry+economy, and industry+economy+population;Hefei urban agglomeration is divided into four driving types: technology+industry+economy, technology+economy, industry+economy, and technology+industry; The urban agglomeration around Poyang Lake is divided into two driving types: technology+industry+economy and industry+economy;Taiyuan urban agglomeration is divided into two driving types:technology+economy and industry+economy. Finally, four countermeasures are proposed to help the economic growth of urban agglomerations in the central region decouple from environmental pollution: promoting production technology reform and innovation, promoting energy conservation and emission reduction;Implement the industrial transformation and upgrading strategy to promote the green transformation of the industry;Optimize the flow of production factors between regions to achieve overall and coordinated development;Maintain an appropriate population concentration and improve the quality of the population.
