The wastewater from chemical parks is highly toxic, poorly biochemical, and complex in quality, and its in-depth study is an important area of current wastewater treatment research, especially the real-time monitoring of its processes. For example,real-time monitoring of sludge settling ratio in chemical park wastewater treatment plants can visualize the performance of activated sludge and the operation of wastewater plants and guide the operation of water plants. In the past, the chemical park wastewater treatment plant used the measuring cylinder method to determine the sludge settling ratio, which was affected by the measurement process, different testing personnel and the number of times, and its timeliness was poor and the data error was large.Based on this, this study investigated the sludge settling ratio of wastewater plants in chemical parks, developed a new device for online detection of sludge settling ratio, and successfully applied it to the existing wastewater treatment plants in chemical parks.First, the measurement principle of the online testing instrument is to calculate the sludge settling ratio using image recognition technology. In this paper, the sludge settling ratio is read by identifying the number of scale features for graduated cylinders. For unscaled cylinders the sludge settling ratio is measured based on image recognition of the sludge projected area. Both image detection methods have an error of ±1%.The second method is chosen as the measurement method of the instrument in this paper because of the flowability of the graduated cylinder, which allows continuous online measurement of the sludge settling ratio.Secondly, this study constructs and designs the online detection instrument from both hardware composition and software aspects. The hardware part is mainly composed of camera, pump, valve and graduated cylinder. The device streamlines the structure of online sludge settling ratio monitoring instruments through camera recognition technology and a scale-free cylinder design.Due to the fluffy structure of the sludge from the chemical park wastewater plant, the settling of the sludge in the newly designed measuring cylinder and the settling process in the inflow tube are independent of each other,so that the process of measuring the sludge settling ratio is not affected. The software part was designed and developed based on the Python programming language, and a new man-machine friendly interface was developed for the operation of the device, which allows real-time observation of the sludge settling situation. The process has been designed for fully automated operation in accordance with the requirements of the new plant operation. Finally,a comparative study between the data measured by manual measuring cylinders and the data measured by the new device was carried out in the existing chemical park wastewater treatment plant.First,at different sludge concentrations, the error of the two measurements remained at ±1%,indicating that the data measured by both are consistent. In the case of a very homogeneous sludge distribution, the asymptotic significance of the two nonparametric tests is greater than 0.05,indicating that there is no significant difference between the data measured by the measuring cylinder and the equipment. Finally, the stability of the measured data of this instrument was demonstrated by the interquartile range of 2% and 17% of the measured data of the instrument and the measuring cylinder under the actual chemical park wastewater treatment plant and sludge dynamic conditions, respectively. These illustrate that the instrument is well suited for the online detection of sludge settling ratio in wastewater plants in chemical parks.
