The carbon emission from university buildings is a key area of construction carbon emissions. With the development of higher education in recent years, many universities have begun to build new campuses, resulting in an increasing carbon emission. In the background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the carbon emission calculation and reduction of newly built buildings in universities are important contents of carbon peak and carbon neutrality in universities, which is of great significance for achieving carbon neutrality goals of the whole society.Firstly, this study constructs a carbon emission assessment model for the newly built university buildings in China based on Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)theory, including unit process construction, inventory model establishment and data collection scope. In addition to the construction, operation, disposal phase, the carbon reduction phase has been included innovatively.Taking the recycling of building waste materials and greening carbon fixation into the assessment scope is to form a complete framework for building life cycle assessment. The inventory database is constructed based on the latest Chinese standards and local databases. This study takes Beijing University of Chemical Technology as an example to evaluate the life cycle carbon emissions of 22 newly built buildings in the case university. The average annual life cycle carbon emissions of newly built buildings in this campus are 2.8t /.During the operation phase, the carbon emissions accounted for 70.7%,while the embodied carbon accounted for 29.3%.The recycling of building waste materials and the greening carbon fixation contributed5.9% and 2.4% of carbon emissions reduction, respectively.Subsequently, the characteristics of carbon emissions of newly built university buildings were analyzed from two aspects: embodied carbon emissions and operational carbon emissions, which reveals the carbon emission characteristics and low-carbon performance of newly built buildings. At the end of this study, three carbon reduction scenarios-namely heating system electrification, electricity decarbonization, and renewable energy utilizationwere set up from the perspective of energy system improvement. The effects of carbon reduction in each scenario of newly built university buildings were analyzed and feasible suggestions were proposed. The results indicate that the air source heating pump has good carbon reduction potential, while it is necessary to consider the regional power carbon emission factors and system efficiency when using it;The ambitious plan of power system decarbonization in Beijing has strengthened the carbon reduction effect, therefore it is necessary to accelerate the adjustment of power structure; The utilization of renewable energy can significantly reduce operational carbon emissions, and comprehensive renewable energy stations can be established in the campus.Photovoltaic power systems and biomass cogeneration systems can be set up to achieve economies of scale in renewable energy utilization. This study provides a complete calculation model for the carbon emissions accounting of newly built university buildings in China, and can also provide reference for the carbon reduction work in newly built university buildings in China.
