| China’s cumulative investment in ASEAN reached US $112.3 billion.China’s investment has had an important impact on ASEAN’s economic development and social progress.China’s OFDI to ASEAN countries is of great significance to both China and ASEAN countries.Through such transnational investment,China and ASEAN countries can deepen international production capacity cooperation and optimize industrial structure,so as to maintain reasonable economic growth and highquality development, and help improve the infrastructure construction of ASEAN countries. However,in recent years, some countries have accused China’s investment in the ASEAN region of finding an area to emit carbon dioxide.but not benefiting local residents, and the voice against Chinese investment has been growing louder. Some ASEAN countries have even joined the criticism that China’s foreign direct investment is having a negative impact on the local environment, accusing China of seeking a "pollution haven".These arbitrary views on China’s foreign direct investment will not only damage China’s image in the international community, but also have a negative impact on China’s further economic cooperation with other countries. In the first part, unit root and collinearity tests are carried out. After meeting the research conditions, panel threshold model is used for regression. It is found that the impact of China’s direct investment on the total carbon emissions of ASEAN countries is not invariable, but will change with the change of trade openness. In the second part, economic development level and industrial structure are selected as mediating variables, and ASEAN countries are divided into "relatively high income countries" and "relatively low income countries" to study the effects of economic development and industrial structure on countries with different levels of development. The characteristics of China’s outward investment are a topic of increasing concern among scholars,as well as its relationship with the carbon emissions of the host country. However, due to the nascent nature of this field of study, there are currently insufficient research papers to explore China’s role as an investment source country. To date, there is still no conclusive conclusion on the impact of China’s OFDI on the carbon emissions of the home country. The results show that economic development level is the mediating variable of "relatively higher income countries" and "relatively lower income countries" and has opposite effects on carbon emissions of the two types of countries.Industrial structure is the mediating variable of "relatively higher income countries" and plays a positive role in improving carbon emissions of these countries, but the indirect effect is not significant in "relatively low income countries".The fixed-effect model in the robustness test verifies the conclusions of the above two models and shows that China’s direct investment in ASEAN is conducive to improving local carbon emissions.Based on these experiences and facts, this document also puts forward relevant policy recommendations to put forward China’s foreign direct investment and the sustainable development of ASEAN,as well as to eliminate bias against China’s international investment. This provides more opportunities for both sides to strengthen regional economic cooperation in the future. |
