In the process of hydraulic lifting and conveying, polymetallic nodules will be repeatedly impacted by the impeller blades of the deep-sea multi-stage mining lifting motor pump, resulting in degradation and change in the particle size, which will eventually affect the amount of recoverable ore on the surface and tailings discharge, and cause the change of the twophase flow conveying characteristics in the lifting equipment. In this paper, the methods of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental verification are used to conduct in-depth research on the degradation of particles in the lifting motor pump and the influence of the degraded particles on the wear characteristics of the hydraulic components of the pump. The main research contents of the full text are as follows:(1)The discrete element software EDEM is used to establish bonding particles that conform to seabed minerals’ wetting and crushing characteristics.Combined with the macroscopic mechanical property parameters of polymetallic nodules, the microscopic parameters in the bonding model were calibrated using uniaxial compression and Brazilian splitting simulation tests.(2)Based on the structural parameters of the deep-sea six-stage mining lifting motor pump, the fluid domain calculation model of the lifting motor pump is established, and the bonding particle model is based on using the calibrated microscopic parameters.Using the two-phase flow calculation method solved by CFD-DEM coupling, the influences of the number of pass times, flow rate, and rotational speed on the degradation characteristics of the particles in the lifting motor pump were studied, and the size distribution of the particles after degradation was statistically analyzed.(3)Using the deep-sea six-stage mining lifting motor pump conveying experimental system, the degradation experiment of the particle circulating through the pump was completed. The experimental results were compared with the numerical simulation results to verify the accuracy of the numerical simulation method in studying particle degradation.(4)Based on the particle size distribution results of particle degradation, the Oka erosion wear model was used to study the influence of particle size change and particle shape on the wear of hydraulic components of the lifting motor pump.Reasonable improvement suggestions are given to the parts that are easily worn by the lifting motor pump.
