The horizontal ring high intensity magnetic separator using grooved plates exhibits superior separation performance than the vertical ring high gradient magnetic separator adopting rod matrices in recovering fine-grained weakly magnetic minerals.The grooved plates generally use right-angle teeth,due to the tip of the teeth is extremely sharp,with easy magnetization full,easy to wear deformation,the depth of magnetic force shallow and other deficiencies,resulting in the horizontal ring high intensity magnetic separator separation efficiency is difficult to further enhance.Based on this,this study attempts to optimize the capture of fine-grained weakly magnetic minerals by the horizontal ring high gradient magnetic separator with elliptical teeth.The differences in the magnetic field characteristics and magnetic particle trapping behavior of right-angle tooth media and elliptical tooth media with different aspect ratios under the same cross-sectional area were investigated using COMSOL software,and the magnetic media was fabricated for experimental verification,and the results of the study were as follows:(1)In single layer arrangement,the region around tooth tips and valleys respectively exhibit magnetically attractive and repulsive under relatively low applied induction.Some part of regions around tooth valleys of elliptic tooth plates can also be transferred to be magnetically attractive under high applied induction.Within a certain long diameter ratio,the particle trapping performance of the elliptical teeth is enhanced with the increase of the long diameter ratio and elliptic tooth plates with aspect ratio 1.5≤λ≤3 has superior particle capture performance than conventional grooved plates.(2)In multi-layer arrangement,The magnetic field characteristics of the grooved plates are symmetrically distributed with the layer symmetry plane,and the distribution characteristics are basically the same as in the single row distribution,and the interaction of the magnetic fields of different grooved plates has an increasing effect on the interlayer magnetic field characteristics;There is a certain matching relationship between the particle sorting performance of the grooved plates and the particle size,tooth tip distance and magnetic induction strength,the tooth tip distance is smaller when the grooved plates achieves the best particle capture ability under the lower magnetic induction strength or small particle size,and the tooth tip distance is larger when the grooved plates achieves the best particle capture ability under the higher magnetic induction strength or large particle size;The particle capture ability of elliptical grooved plates that always satisfy the aspect ratio 2≤λ≤3 under different conditions is better than that of right-angle grooved plates.(3)The experimental results are basically consistent with the simulation conclusions.The combination of elliptical grooved plates with tooth tip distance L=1 mm,magnetic induction B0=0.9 T,andλ=3 had the highest improvement in sorting performance over right-angle grooved plates under different test conditions:3.36%Fe increase in concentrate grade,10.86%increase in yield,18.86%increase in recovery,and 14.06%increase in separation efficiency.The test results prove that the sorting performance of elliptical grooved plates with an aspect ratio 2≤λ≤3 are better than that of right-angle grooved plates.
