The culture in Hexi area of Gansu Province has obvious regional characteristics,in which paper-cutting and embroidery continue the common characteristics of folk art in cultural values, functional occasions and humanistic implications, and have changed in composition mode, color language and aesthetic choice with the development of the times. This paper adopts the research methods of sociology and anthropology, taking the historical and cultural development as the context, and analyzes the time of birth, appearance and modern development mode of paper-cutting and embroidery in Hexi.Combined with historical documents, existing achievements and field investigation data, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis of the objective conditions such as ecological and human environment, business activities, agricultural and pastoral evolution and living places produced by Hexi paper-cutting and embroidery.Hexi paper-cutting and embroidery is a regional folk art form supported by the regional environment, driven by trade, with cultural fusion as the background, and localized changes have taken place after the multi-ethnic integration. The multi-ethnic cultural exchange makes paper-cutting and embroidery not only retain part of agricultural culture in image expression, but also integrate nomadic cultural thinking and theme characteristics. The appearance of embroidery technology in Hexi region is closely related to textiles, and the prosperity of silk road trade has promoted the regional exchange and development of embroidery art to some extent. The academic circles generally agree that the origin of paper-cutting can be attributed to the relationship with paper. With the management of the western regions in the Han Dynasty and the gradual migration of immigrants from the Central Plains to Hexi,paper-cutting works of art gradually appeared in Hexi.Due to the difference of division of labor between men and women in traditional society, the inheritance groups of the two are mostly concentrated in women, and they have certain similarities in content and expression forms. Its pattern formation is an aesthetic choice of local people’s natural worship, witchcraft worship and religious belief in the process of survival. After a long period of historical evolution, its identity function and cultural value have been continued. After the evaluation of intangible cultural heritage, the functions of paper-cutting and embroidery have changed from demand to appreciation, and the inheritor has turned to conscious creation, which has established a good interaction with the society.Intangible cultural heritage itself has gradually become a symbol of urban culture from local art.The cultural form of intangible cultural heritage has changed due to the changes of social organizations, economic structure, scientific and technological conditions and other real environments.Protecting and inheriting regional handicrafts and maintaining the diversity of national culture are the needs of modern social and cultural development. The value of non-legacy handicrafts in contemporary society has been continuously enlarged.Only by promoting the integration and development of non-legacy in the two-way dimensions of "history-contemporary" and "region-global" can non-legacy be truly integrated into contemporary people’s lives.
