| The separation of oil and water was greatly important due to the requirement of oil production and the threatening of oil spill. On one hand, the waste was hazardous to the environment and the creatures. On the other hand, the oil could be reused once it was treated properly.Especially when the water was deeply eliminated, most of the oil could be well utilized. For conventional elimination of emulsified water, the chemical demulsification was the most accepted technique, but it had a substantial material and energy consumption. For the separation of un-emulsified water, gravimetric sedimentation was the most used measurement, but it worked slowly, and the long residence time required large equipment and space.Hydrocyclone separation could accelerate the process effectively, but the separation effect is sensitive to the operating parameters. In this paper, melamine sponge and printing paper are used as substrates to prepare hydrophobic and lipophilic oil-water separation materials. The main contents include the following three aspects:(1)The carbon-loaded sponge was prepared by solvent free coating of thermosetting toner from a laser printer via simple heating. The sponge was used for oil-water mixture and emulsion separation. The sponge had good separation performance for the oil-water mixture. In dynamic oil recovery study, the sponge had a flux up to 2300~8829L/(m2·h)for kerosene and n-hexane.For the water-in-petroleum emulsion with 60%water content, the final water content could be brought down to 1.7~5.0%after 2 cycles of operation. While for the waterin-kerosene emulsion with low water content of 10%,the recovered oil had water content below 1.0%.(2)The hydrophobic toner membrane was prepared by direct printing on a copy paper with a laser printer. The printed membrane showed good hydrophobicity and it allowed the selective permeation of oil without permeation of water. The flux of kerosene got up to 3979~9043 L/(m2·h)(0.05 MPa)depending on the darkness of membrane, which was able to fit the requirement of fast oil retraction, which could had good utilization in oil cleanup.(3)Doping modification of materials with amphiphilic polyether to enhance the separation ability of emulsified oil-water mixture. The toner membrane with demulsifier showed enhanced separation performance for water-in-kerosene emulsion. With emulsion contained 50%of water, the flux was 138~1300 L/(m2·h).Demulsification proceeded during the filtration, and 74%~94%of the water was separated from the emulsion. This method is expected to avoid the generation of concentrated emulsion. This study provided a novel and facile way to utilize one waste for the treatment of another waste and revealed a potential industrial utilization of toner waste, which was beneficial to the emission reduction, and a facile way for fast separation of oil from water, which was beneficial to the oil waste treatment. |
