| The Tudor dynasty was the golden age of British absolute monarchy,and the reign of Queen Elizabeth I was also one of the important periods for the development of British apparel embroidery.At this time,the prosperity of apparel embroidery was closely related to the social and historical environment at that time.The Tudor Dynasty was in a stage of dramatic social change.The religious reform,economic development,the Renaissance,and changes in social customs made apparel embroidery change from religious embroidery to secular embroidery during this period.The religious embroidery that prevailed in British history also laid a solid foundation for the development of secular embroidery.At the same time,out of emphasizing imperial power and strengthening her rule,with the need to promote the image of the "Virgin Queen",and her own great enthusiasm for apparel embroidery,Elizabeth I brought the symbolic role of apparel embroidery to the extreme,she had played an important role in promoting the development of apparel embroidery,it also made British apparel embroidery have localized style characteristics.Through the collection of documents,cultural relics,portraits and other related materials,this research uses iconography,philology and generalization and other research methods to discuss the types and design characteristics of apparel embroidery in the Elizabeth I period.Originating from the social background that the British aristocracy paid attention to their own enjoyment under the prevalence of humanism and luxury,apparel embroidery was mostly used in court clothing and home furnishings,although after the Reformation,religious embroidery declined,religious embroidery produced privately such as Wintour’s vestments still appeared.Embroidery was one of the educational contents that British women had to receive at that time,and embroidery samples for recording stitches and patterns also became the witness of the base and development of apparel embroidery.The embroidery pattern design,mainly in the form of staggered hollow swirl patterns and interwoven ribbons,is full of metaphors and symbolic meanings.At the same time,the embroidery techniques with characteristics of the time also reflect the unique charm of apparel embroidery at that time.The Royal Embroidery Academy,where tradition and innovation coexist,is an important institution of researching and developing for British apparel embroidery to move towards modernity,which makes traditional embroidery still have strong vitality in contemporary time.This research also explores the formal language of British apparel embroidery transformed into modern design work from a practical perspective through experimental design.Apparel embroidery in the period of Elizabeth I has an important historical position and academic value in the history of British apparel.Through the research of this stage of apparel embroidery,can not only deeply analyze the sociological reasons for the development of embroidery in the period of Elizabeth I,but also help to offer another perspective to research western apparel history and Tudor apparel embroidery. |
