Fiber and fiber sensors have been widely used in multiple fields,but polymer coated fiber is difficult to use in complex electromagnetic environments due to its poor radiation resistance,thus cannot meet the requirements of fiber usage in harsh environments.Metal coated fiber has emerged as the times require.The preparation methods of metal coated fiber include offline preparation method and online preparation method.The offline preparation method of metal coated fiber can achieve offline coating of various metals,but fibers prepared by these methods are usually short in distance and can easily lead to a decrease in the tensile strength.At present,there are few types of metals that can be prepared using online preparation methods.For online coating method,there are difficulties in modifying the wire drawing equipment,designing the coating cup,and selecting process parameters.In response to the above issues,the online method is applied to prepare In/Zn-coated silica fibers.By renovates the silica fiber drawing tower,selects and designs the coating cup material and structure,successfully prepares In/Zn-coated silica fibers online.Analyze the In/Zn-coated silica fibers from the aspects of coating coverage rate,coating thickness,coating grain size,coating surface roughness,and coating adhesion.Study the mechanical properties of In/Zn-coated silica fibers prepared by different parameter,and compare them with bare optical fibers and metal coated fibers prepared by offline coating method.The main achievements of this paper are as follows:(1)Preparation of In/Zn-coated silica fibers.By renovating the wire drawing tower,selecting and designing the coating cup structure and choosing the coating cup materials reasonably,long-distance continuous In/Zn-coated silica fibers have been successfully prepared online.(2)Obtainment of the influence of online preparation process parameters on the performance of In/Zn-coated silica fiber.With the increase of liquid metal temperature,the value of metal Capillary number Ca decreases,leading to the decrease of coating coverage rate while the thickness of the coating gradually decreases,the surface roughness of the coating gradually increases,and the grain size of the coating gradually increases.As the wire drawing speed increases and the contact time of the metal liquid decreases,the coating coverage rate decreases,and the coating thickness first decreases and then increases.(3)Comparison of the mechanical properties of In/Zn-coated silica fibers and bare optical fibers prepared online.For 125 μm fiber,the breaking force of In-coated silica fiber has been significantly improved by 210%,while the breaking force of Zn-coated fiber has been slightly improved by 139%.(4)Elucidation of the influence of online preparation process parameters on the mechanical properties of In/Zn-coated silica fibers.As the temperature of the molten metal increases,the coating coverage rate,the coating thickness,and the grain size of the coating increases,resulting in a gradual decrease in strength.Through fitting,it was found that the breaking force increases linearly with the coating thickness.
