| Biomass amendment is a new type of soil amendment, prepared from wood chips and horse manure as the main raw materials, which not only covers the functions of traditional amendments, but also has a significant effect on the improvement of soil void conditions, but the effect on sandy soils is still unclear. Therefore, this study uses potted plants to verify the role of biomass amendments in improving the water and fertiliser holding capacity of sandy soils, which can provide a stable and sustainable new measure for sand control and soil modification measures. In this study,a home-made biomass soil conditioner was developed using wood chips and horse manure as the main raw materials to address the characteristics of sandy soils, such as poor soils and water and fertiliser leaks. The effect on the physical and chemical properties of the sandy soil, its water retention capacity and the growth status of small-leaved mallow plants was studied in pot experiments and compared with traditional amendments(organic fertilisers and water retention agents). The results of the study are as follows:(1)The biomass amendment reduced soil bulk, increased porosity and improved water holding capacity of sandy soils. The application of biomass amendment alone(35%)significantly reduced soil bulk density by 2.23%(p < 0.05)and significantly increased soil porosity, water content and water holding capacity by 9.32%,8.17% and6.17% respectively(p < 0.05)compared to organic fertiliser(35%),while soil bulk density, porosity, water content and water holding capacity decreased compared to the combination of organic fertiliser and water retention agent, with their contents decreasing by 1.68%,3.94%,5.26% and 7.17%,with no significant differences(p > 0.05).(2)The biomass amendment increased soil nutrient content and reduced soil p H.Compared with CK,single application of biomass amendment(35%)soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total potassium, alkaline soluble nitrogen, effective potassium and fast-acting potassium content were significantly increased by 128.10%,233.08%,20.23%,17.12%,16.83% and 333.63% respectively(p < 0.05),and soil p H was reduced by 0.76,which was not significantly different(p > 0.05);compared with Compared to organic fertilizer(35%),biomass amendment soil organic matter, total nitrogen, alkaline soluble nitrogen, effective potassium and fast-acting potassium were all reduced, with their contents decreasing by 17.30%,34.34%,22.17%,2.81%,86.77% and 59.85%,(3)respectively,and soil total potassium content significantly increased by 1.10%(p < 0.05).(4)Biomass amendments significantly increased plant seedling emergence and root growth, and increased plant biomass accumulation. All treatment groups were able to increase the seedling rate and biomass of the small-leaved mallow plants. The seedling rate and biomass of the small-leaved mallow plants increased by 14.12% and 2.69%under the treatment of biomass improver(35%)compared with organic fertilizer;and by15.48% and 1.51% compared with the organic fertilizer and water retention agent application,respectively.(5)Biomass amendments are more effective than traditional amendments in reducing soil capacity, increasing plant emergence and accumulating biomass, but their effect on soil nutrient and organic matter content is lower than that of traditional amendments. In summary, the new biomass amendment can effectively improve the ability of sandy soil to "retain water and fertilizer",improve the physical and chemical properties of sandy soil, and significantly promote the growth of small-leaved mallow. In sand control, the biomass amendment can replace traditional amendments such as organic fertilisers and water retention agents in terms of plant growth, economy and green development. |
