Dellsén’s Account Research On The Noetic Account Of Scientific Progress

The scientific progress is one of the most discussed topics in the field of philosophy of science.First,there is broad agreement that science has made progress.But what about scientific progress?How does it come about? What yardstick is used to measure scientific progress? These have always been debated.In the answer to these questions,the following opinions have been formed: the semantic interpretation represented by Karl Popper and Ilkka Niiniluoto;The functional-internalism interpretation represented by Thomas Kuhn and Larry Laudan;The cognitive interpretation represented by Alexander Bird;The understanding account represented by Finnur Dellsén.As far as Dellsén’s account is concerned,since it is based on the concept of scientific understanding,which is itself hotly discussed in the field of philosophy of science,the theory has attracted much attention as soon as it was proposed.The first chapter of this article from the discrimination of the concept of "progress",gives its several connotation.It shows that there is still a theory of understanding which conforms to the theory of scientific progress,which is also an important option to explain scientific progress,and points out the shortcomings of the past understanding view.The second chapter elaborates Dellsén’s understanding account.It shows the concept of scientific understanding and its cognitive superiority in his theory of progress and points out that his theory is modified.Later understanding account redefines understanding as dependency model which solves the deficiency of earlier theory.By comparing with semantic interpretation,functional-internalist interpretation and cognitive interpretation,the advantages of understanding account are illustrated.The third chapter expounds the significance and dilemma of Dellsén in the understanding account of scientific progress.It is significant in that it puts forward very competing views of scientific progress and gives scientific understanding a richer interpretation based on its compatibility with scientific progress.The dilemma lies in the compatibility of the noetic account with existing cases and research paradigms.Finally,some solutions to the dilemma facing the noetic account are put forward tentatively.First,the category of scientific progress illustrates the compatibility between the case and the noetic account,which can be solved by using the internal perspective and joint dependency model.The second is the compatibility of the framework of realism with the noetic account,which can be avoided by introducing the "effectiveness" proposed by Henk de Regt and Victor Gijsbers instead of "quasi-factive".
