The coastal mudflats are an important part of the coastal zone with rich natural resources and pleasant ecological environment, which have become the focus of coastal development in recent years and have shown great potential for development. In China, the coastal mudflats in Jiangsu coastal zone account for a quarter of the total amount in the country, and it has become one of the most economically developed areas in China due to its unique geographical location. However,in the process of economic development, the coastal mudflats are facing the threats of fishery development, polder and climate change. With the accelerated economic development of coastal areas in Jiangsu Province, the coastal mudflats are facing special challenges and their changes are influenced by human factors. Therefore,it is important to study the inventory and spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of coastal mudflat resources and analyze the importance of their changes over time to provide a scientific basis for future resource exploration, rational development and protection of the Jiangsu coastal zone. This study focuses on the extraction of coastal mudflat information from remote sensing images.Considering that the existing national coastal mudflat distribution maps in China cannot meet the needs of practical management,we used Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 images to produce accurate tidal mudflat maps with high spatial resolution of Jiangsu coastal mudflats in the past six years, and analyzed the driving forces from both physical geography and human policy factors. The results of the study showed that:(1)The use of remote sensing time series image data can capture the absolute high and low tide levels to obtain information about the mudflats. In this study,we take full advantage of the Google Earth Engine(GEE)platform, which has unmatched efficiency and flexibility in processing a large number of remotely sensed images by traditional remote sensing means.By fully utilizing the advantages of Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1,we obtained high spatial resolution(10 m)mudflat maps of Jiangsu Province for the past six years, and the results of confusion matrix validation showed that the overall accuracy was close to 90%.(2)The area of coastal mudflats in Jiangsu has shown an increase and then a decrease in the last six years.Natural factors such as the sedimentary effect of rivers, the influence of tides and coastal erosion and deposition processes in Jiangsu coastal mudflats play an important role in the change of coastal mudflat area. However, human factors play a decisive influence on the change of coastal mudflat area, especially the formulation and implementation of guiding policies. The results of this study provide a scientific basis and technical support for the fusion of multi-source remote sensing satellite data and coastal mudflat information extraction methods, and provide a reference for the future enhanced accuracy of tidal beach extraction and rapid automatic acquisition of coastal mudflat distribution maps.In the future development of coastal mudflat resources,it is necessary to consider economic development, ecological protection and sustainability, and formulate policies from a macro perspective in order to guide the development activities scientifically and rationally.
