The passive microwave remote sensing on board the satellite plays an important role in data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, and the retrieve of temperature and humidity profile. In order to meet the growing needs of microwave satellite launch, and to plan for the subsequent networking of microwave satellites and the construction of small satellite constellations,it is necessary to build a microwave satellite simulation system. This paper constructs a simulation system based on the rapid radiative transfer model ARMS(Advanced Radiative Transfer Modeling System)for the NOAA-20(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)ATMS(Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder)instrument. The main contents of this paper are as follows:(1)Develop a set of geolocation algorithms based on the Simplified General Perturbations(SGP4)model and Two-Line Mean element data. The geolocation of the NOAA-20 ATMS instrument is achieved by geographic coordinate conversion, and the geolocation results are revised by using differences between ascending and descending brightness temperatures and the attitude rotation matrix. Finally, the geolocation accuracy is evaluated based on the coastline detection method. It is obtained that the accuracy of the algorithm results in this paper is high, and the geolocation errors in the cross-track and along-track directions are 0.200 km and-0.093 km.(2)Develop an antenna brightness temperature simulation system based on fast radiative transfer mode ARMS.Based on the ERA5 reanalysis data, this paper realizes the simulation of the antenna brightness temperature of the ATMS instrument after completing the data matching, and evaluates the accuracy using the measured brightness temperature data. The study shows that the simulation accuracy of ATMS channels 6-15 is high, and the global RMSE(Root Mean Square Error)is lower than 2.5 K;however, there is still room for improvement in some surface sensitive channels.Under clear sky and ocean surface conditions, the standard deviation and the absolute value of deviation of some channels are better than 1 K,showing very high accuracy.(3)A comparative study of the ATMS resolution reconstruction algorithm based the simulation system. The BGI(Backus-Gilbert Inversion)algorithm, the AAPP(ATOVS and AVHRR Pre-processing Package)algorithm and the improved AAPP algorithm are compared and evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively on the antenna gain function, simulated data set and measured data set, respectively. The results show the improved AAPP algorithm can better suppress the noise in resolution enhancement;the AAPP algorithm outperforms the BGI algorithm in resolution smoothing.
