As of the end of 2020,China has achieved a comprehensive moderately prosperous society, and lifted all rural populations out of poverty according to current standards. However, there is still a phenomenon of uneven urban-rural development and insufficient rural development.Evaluating the level of rural development is crucial to understanding rural areas and rural revitalization, and the key to evaluating the level of rural development lies in measuring rural economies.Traditional measures of rural economies are mainly based on statistical data to construct an indicator system, which often relies on statistics or household survey data, leading to the following problems:(1)it is cumbersome to collect data for numerous rural areas;(2)missing data for certain indicators can lead to errors in conclusions;(3)it requires a lot of manpower and financial resources and the objectivity of the data is difficult to guarantee.Nighttime light data has the characteristics of objectivity, stability, timeliness, and comprehensiveness, which can solve the problems of missing and inaccurate statistical data in rural areas.Currently, many scholars have evaluated provincial, municipal, and county-level economic measures based on nighttime light data, and then explored the evolution of economic patterns, but there are few studies have been conducted to compare the development and spatial and temporal evolution of the rural economy and the development of urban and rural areas from the perspective of nighttime light data. Therefore, this article first extracts urban-rural boundaries based on land-use data, and explores the development and changes in rural areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region using nighttime light data to characterize economic development, providing a reference basis for rural revitalization. The specific research content and results are as follows:(1)Using GlobeLand30 land-use remote sensing images to extract the urban-rural boundaries of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, synthesized and processed the NPP-VIIRS nighttime light remote sensing images of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2012 to 2020,and based on this data, constructed a long time series of nighttime light indices, nighttime light change indices, and nighttime light change slope for rural areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of rural development changes. The research results showed that in terms of quantitative analysis, the economic development level of rural areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region had significantly improved from 2012 to 2020,with the rural nighttime light in Beijing,Tianjin, and Langfang areas increasing significantly under the drive of the capital economic circle, and the growth rate of Hengshui,a city with low rural light intensity values, was higher than that of Beijing,Tianjin, and Langfang, indicating that regions with poor economic development potential also have great potential for rural development. In terms of qualitative analysis, there are still counties in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region where the rural nighttime light change slope is negative, indicating that rural areas are prone to re-entering poverty.(2)The study utilized methods such as correlation analysis, standard deviation ellipse, and Gini coefficient analysis to explore the spatial evolution patterns and balance changes of night-time light in 13 cities and rural areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The results showed that the rural areas in cities with better economic development tended to exhibit agglomerative or expansive development, while the rural areas located in the Yanshan-Taihang Mountains were more likely to be marginalized during the development process.Based on the night-time light intensity values in rural areas in 2012 and the growth rate of night-time light over nine years, the 13 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region were divided into four types: high base number and high growth rate(Type A),low base number and high growth rate(Type B),low base number and low growth rate(Type C),and high base number and low growth rate(Type D).In terms of balance analysis based on night-time light data,it can be seen that the Gini coefficient of night-time light in most rural areas in cities remained below 0.4 from 2012 to 2020,indicating a relatively balanced development overall. However, attention should be paid to the cities where the rural Gini coefficient is increasing,as excessive imbalances in rural development can lead to social conflicts.(3)Finally,based on the night-time light data in urban and rural areas, the study evaluated the coordination between urban and rural development. The results showed that with the support of the rural revitalization strategy, rural areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region have developed rapidly, and the coordination between urban and rural areas has increased year by year, resulting in a more balanced urban-rural relationship.
