In the early years of the Republic of China,with the development of modernization,the pace of penetration from the economic field to the education field was gradually accelerated.Since the beginning of the Westernization Movement,the modernization of education in China has entered a new stage of development.During this period,Chinese principals,as a special group of new knowledge,gradually became the best candidates to spread new ideas.Chung Wing-kwong is the first Chinese president of Lingnan University.His educational thoughts are influenced by nationalism.Under the influence of materialism and scientism in the modernization of education,Chung Wing-kwong advocated "saving the country through education",cultivating young people into practical talents,and then let young people save China.However,Chung Wing-kwong's uniqueness lies in that he is a pious Christian,and religion plays an incomparable role in his educational practice.As a result,Chung Wing-kwong's educational thought and practice are faced with two completely different ideological orientations.How to adjust to the contradiction between religion and nationalism and make appropriate educational proposition is a problem that Chung Wing-kwong always faces.As an old intellectual who initially received traditional education,Chung Wing-kwong was well aware of the poison of the imperial examination.Later,he was influenced by christianity and baptized as a christian.He was briefly engaged in revolutionary movements and finally determined to devote his life to education.He successively served as the Director of the Education Department of Guangdong Province,President of Lingnan University,etc.During this process,Chung Wing-kwong absorbed and integrated his educational thoughts and identities,and gradually deepened his cognition of the relationship between the people and the country.The contradiction between christianity and nationality runs through Chung Wing-kwong's educational thought and practice all his life.How to properly adjust to this contradiction and provide new ideas for the transformation of traditional education to modernization of education was a problem that was considered by the Chinese principals at that time.In this paper,under the background of education modernization in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,we focused on the education thoughts of the Chung Wing-kwong.We take the religious and national contradictions in educational thoughts as the main clue to interpret Chung Wing-kwong's educational thoughts and practices in various periods,and focus on the educational measures of Chung Wing-kwong's appointment as the Director of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education.At the same time,I will discuss the interaction between Sinicization and Christianization of Lingnan University,hoping to gain a clearer understanding of Chung Wing-kwong's educational thought and practice.I will also compare and analyze Chung Wing-kwong and the Chinese principals,explore the mutual influence between the two and the interactive relationship with the modernization of education,and try to make an effective combing of Chung Wing-kwong's status and influence in the modernization of education.
