With the development of virtual reality(VR)and augmented reality(AR)technologies, immersive data analytics has become a fast-growing research topic.Node-link diagram,in 3D,is one of the basic visualizations to present graphs in such immersive environments. However, there have been few studies on investigating encoding and layout for weighted graphs in immersive analytics. To encode weights in weighted graphs,a straightforward method is to directly display numeric labels next to the corresponding edges, which is intuitive but leads to visual clutter. To this end,we design five visual encoding variants for representing weights on edges by exploring different visual variables(i.e.,saturation,transparency,edge width, segment pattern, and animation). We further conduct a controlled user study to assess the effectiveness of the six variants(including the numeric label baseline)with three analysis tasks on both static and dynamic weights. The results show that the baseline has higher accuracy but longer response time than other variants for identifying static edge weights, whereas the width variant and the segment variant perform well for identifying dynamic weights. We also provide guidelines on designing edge weight visualization for 3D node-link diagrams in immersive analytics. In terms of graph layout,we propose and design a new interaction-based layout technique in order to solve the problems of visual clutter and severe occlusion in dense graphs. To address the visual clutter,we migrated a projection-based 2D graph layout method to 3D.To address the severe occlusion,we ensure that the focal region is not occluded by moving the occlusion node between the observer and the focal region. The Bezier curves were used for the link drawing. The layout adjustment of graph is performed by adjusting the position of the nodes and the control points of each Bezier curve. We designed a comparative experiment and the results verified the effectiveness of the technique. This study provides a new available technique for the layout of dense graphs.
