Silicon photomultiplier(SiPM)is a new type of photoelectric conversion device based on Geiger mode avalanche photodiodes.It has the outstanding advantages of high sensitivity,large photosensitive surface and fast response speed.It has a broad application prospect in laser ranging and laser radar.Therefore,the detection characteristics of SiPM on laser echo micropulse optical signal are studied theoretically and experimentally.The aim is to provide a theoretical basis for the receiver design of micro-pulse lidar using SiPM.On the basis of in-depth data investigation,the detection probability and input/output response formulas of SiPM are derived.Calculate and discuss the influence of input photon number on output response.When the number of incident photons is small,the output response of SiPM is linear.On this basis,Write the Monte Carlo simulation program of SiPM photon detection,and calculate the effects of background light noise,gating position,number of pixels and equivalent photoelectronic threshold on SiPM detection rate,false alarm rate,missed detection rate and SNR under different echo photon conditions.The results show that there is an optimal equivalent photoelectron threshold for different echo photon conditions.The optimal equivalent photoelectron threshold with SNR is 2.5 ep..when the average photon number is in the range of 0.57 to 9.55.at the same time,when the equivalent photoelectronic threshold is higher than 1.5 ep..,the effect of the gate position on the detection performance of SiPM can be ignored.Paper also designs the driving circuit of SiPM,on the basis of the function of circuit simulation,build the SiPM experiment device,carry out the experiments of the dark count,the detection of the optical pulse and the input-output response.The dark counting characteristics of SIPM are given.It can provide a basis for the optimal selection of bias and threshold.At the same time,the correctness of theoretical calculation and simulation results is verified by experiments.The research results of this paper have certain reference value for the understanding of SiPM photon detection characteristics and the optimization application in lidar receiving system.
