Polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals(PS-BPLCs)promise great potential applications in field sequential displays,three-dimensional(3-D)tunable photonic crystals and phase modulator devices,owing to their interesting features,including sub-millisecond response time,optical isotropic dark status,and alignment free.However,some issues,such as high driving voltage,residual birefringence,and hysteresis effect,must be solved before BPLCs can be widely applied.To improve the electro-optical performance of PS-BPLCs,especially the high driving voltage.several methods have been proposed such as protrusion electrodes,large Kerr constant BPLC materials and vertical field switching model.At the first part,some theoretical and literature research of blue phase liquid crystal(PS-BPLC),including the extended Kerr effect,wavelength dependence,temperature dependence and frequency dependence of PSBP LC have been studied.Meanwhile,the photoelectric characteristics of the BPLC device were also investigated.Based on the theoretical research,the parallel and vertical electric field made by different electrode structure designs of PS-BPLC device have been analyzed and their advantages and disadvantages were concluded.Also two novel electrode structures,include double side protrusion and enhancement double side protrusion,were proposed.With the simulated data of double side protrusion electrode and enhancement double side protrusion electrode PS-BPLC device,we may conclude that the transmittance may increase of 20.9% and 36% respectively,compared with conventional IPS structure at the same driving voltage.The influences of the chiral dopant,electrode design,driving voltage and frequency were investigated with the IPS electrode structure PS-BPLC cell.We may find that the clear point and Bragg Scattering were related to the concentration of chiral dopant in the PS-BPLC.And the hysteresis can be affected by the electrode structure,driving voltage and frequency.The study has a positive exploration for the application of the PS-BPLC devices.
