Over the past few decades, science education internationally has placed a high priority on students' building and understanding of core concepts in the context of active learning. The development of core concept constructs has a hierarchical relationship, and students' deeper understanding of science concepts needs to be outlined according to conceptual hierarchies,so the study of conceptual development hierarchies has an important role in teaching and learning. An analysis of the current situation of research at home and abroad reveals that analysis of concept development hierarchies has theoretical support and practical guidance, and at the same time,in order to better guide front-line teaching, researchers are also focusing on the specific performance of concept development hierarchies, but there is less research on the application of concept development hierarchies to evaluate students' performance. In view of the above research status, this study took “homeostasis and regulation of the human body” as an example and firstly identified two core questions that need to be addressed: 1.How to construct the conceptual development levels and their performance under the theme of “homeostasis and regulation of the human body”? 2.What are the specific performance of the students' conceptual development levels in the theme of "Homeostasis and Regulation of the Human Body" and how can they be addressed? The aim of these two questions was to find ways of constructing the conceptual development level and its performance under the theme, and to obtain information about students' performance and problems in the conceptual development level under the theme, and to find solutions to them.Based on the above questions, this study first defined the concepts of biology, core concepts and important concepts through literature review, described in detail how to express the concepts, and briefly described the learning theory that provides theoretical guidance for this study. And guided by theories such as learning progression, the steps for constructing a concept development hierarchy for a topic using a concept development hierarchy map were identified and applied to create a concept development hierarchy map for the core concepts in the topic of “homeostasis and regulation in the human body”.On the basis of the concept development hierarchy chart, the SOLO classification theory was used as a guide to classify the concept development hierarchy levels and to describe the specific performance of each level. Then it was revised through expert consultation and teacher questionnaire survey, and the final description of the conceptual understanding and behavioural performance of each level of conceptual development of “human homeostasis and regulation” was in line with the realities of frontline teaching. Then, based on the performance of the constructed conceptual development levels, this study used this as a basis to design a measurement tool and chose the correctnessconcentration evaluation method to analyse students' performance at each conceptual development level using 235 students from a secondary school in Chengdu, then combined the measurement results with random interviews to analyse students' problems at each conceptual development level, and finally used expert interviews to find solutions with the help of front-line teaching experience. The final conclusions drawn from this study are as follows.1.the concept development hierarchy map was able to construct a concept development hierarchy for the topic “Homeostasis and regulation of the human body”.2.the concept development hierarchy can be effectively described in relation to SOLO classification theory.3.the performance of students in the concept development hierarchy of “Homeost asis and regulation of the human body ” and the countermeasures to solve the problem were obtained. Finally, two suggestions were made for teaching and learning in the context of this study, and the next steps in this study were identified in relation to the shortcomings of the study and the outlook for subsequent research.
