Debilitating standards and records of worrying grades attained by some secondary school candidates,for instance,indicate that most students underperform in the subject area of mathematics,a challenge mainly caused by lack of basic concepts clearly explained for students to understand.This study was conducted to explore the performance of senior secondary school students in mathematics in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Republic of Ghana.The study adopted a qualitative exploratory descriptive research design.The research population included teachers,students and educational administrators.Purposive sampling technique was used to sample participants in the study setting.Based on the findings,it was found that,weak beginning of students was a cause of poor performance in mathematics.The findings also showed that,low interests of students in learning mathematics were identified as a cause of poor performance of students in mathematics.The results also showed that,few students had positive attitude towards the study of mathematics.The results further showed that,respondents cited encouragement from teachers,awakening students interested and improving knowledge of students on mathematics as ways to improve students' performance in mathematics.Based on the findings,the researcher concluded that,students' performance in mathematics was not encouraging at the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Republic of Ghana.The researcher recommended that more counseling should be provided to secondary school students in the study setting to encourage them to improve their knowledge of mathematics by teachers and educational administrators.
