Analysis And Inspiration Of The "National Survey Of Student Engagement" Report

“National survey of student engagement(NSSE)report ” is one of the most authoritative assessments of higher education quality in United States.Over passed two decades,the NSSE report has become an important reference to campus study and bachelor institution improvement.By studying NSSE report,it helps to develop quality improvement in concerns of students and teaching within Chinese campuses based on experiential reflection.With the help of the relevant references in home and abroad,this essay mainly engages the NSSE report in last three years,analyze the major components,features and result applications of NSSE,verify its potential problems and ultimately inspire our institutions from its historical background and development.There are five major sections in this paper.The first part,introduction,mainly summarizes motivation and significance,literature review,definition,and methodology in this research.Second part would traces the historical background and development of ‘NSSE'.Facing the rising tide in global higher education revolution,the inevitable education quality reform and assessment system transition in America,the survey,as a result,came into being.NSSE has experienced three stages in the past 20 years: exploration,stabilization and progression.While in the third,analysis will dig deep into the major components and features of NSSE report.The analysis approaches major components of NSSE report from four aspects of theoretical basis,central objective,indicator system,and program practices.After two decades of investigation and practice,NSSE report has shown an enriching content,as well as its pin-pointed,universal,scientific,and effective features increasingly.Section four will be themed by NSSE results and applications.Holding the “student focused” concept,NSSE outputs its reports by the engagement data collected,integrated and analyzed from students and supports institutions in student performance improvement and students' success.Accomplishments are significant,though some problems and limitations will be.In section five,the paper intended to seek for inspirations to our country.By combing the historical background,developments,major components,features,results and their applications of NSSE,serval inspirations for Chinese student engagement survey improvement can be obtained,which are: to reinforce the “student focused” assessment concept,establish an indicator system with Chinese characteristics,expand NSSE-China participation,and increase result values;at the same time,few enlightenment for student engagement facilitation in China can also be summarized as: to increase academic challenge,promote collaborative learning,enhance student-faculty interaction,and to construct an harmonious campus.
