On the modern Chinese overseas education history,Chinese female overseas education in America in the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China is one of the important parts.Though the number of Chinese women educated in America was smaller than the Chinese men,these women made the extraordinary contribution to Chinese modernization.Based on the above consideration,the paper focuses on the Chinese female overseas education in America from the year of 1880 to 1937,analyzing the development of Chinese modern female overseas education in America,in order to further enrich the research on the history of Chinese modern female overseas education.The paper is divided into three parts,and regards as the main line the relation between Chinese female modern education and overseas education in America,exploring the history of Chinese modern female overseas education in America by the methods of literature research,data analysis and case study.The first part focuses on rising of Chinese female overseas education in America in the late 19th century,introducing the four Chinese women who were the first to studying in American,concluding their characteristics and their relationship with the church education for girls.The second part focuses on the further development of Chinese female overseas education in America.It analyzes the groups of self-support,government-support and boxer-indemnity students,concluding their characteristics respectively in the geography distribution and family background,the education background and intellectual structure,and the choice of major.The third part focuses on how the modern Chinese female education in American developed amidst twists and turns.It introduces the storm that Tsinghua School intended to stop sending boxer-indemnity women student to America,and the improvement of qualification that had great impacts on the number and quality of women studying in America.It explores how the trend of gender equality affected the choices of major and occupation for women studying in American.Taking Yu Qingtang and Wu Yifang as cases,it analyzed how the experience in America influenced their theory and practice in the field of education.From the history of Chinese modern female overseas education in America,it can be concluded that there are similarities between it and the development of Chinese modern female education.In the process,female consciousness of these female students educated in America gradually woke up.
