As a penalty execution system in Qing Dynasty, the expiation penalty is a kind of crime which can be set off or exempted from the original penalty after paying a certain amount of money or completing a certain amount of labor. On the basis of the system of redemption in the former dynasty, the system of redemption in the Qing Dynasty made corresponding adjustments according to its own conditions, forming a set of standardized content, various forms and more complete system of redemption. The types of expiation in Qing Dynasty can be divided into five types: receiving expiation, expiation, paying expiation, donating expiation and expiation for the effectiveness of official crime. The consummation of the donation and the official crime's potency atonement in the Qing Dynasty shows that the Qing Dynasty did not stick to the laws and regulations, but adapted to the objective needs of the society, making the law heavy but not harsh.Although the system of expiation has many disadvantages,it is not only a privilege system to let the rich escape from the punishment of the law. However,in the Qing Dynasty, when the feudal absolute monarchy system was at its peak, the system of redemption was inevitably influenced by the subjective factors of the monarchy, which inevitably destroyed the fairness and justice of the social rule of law.
