Kazuo Ishiguro, the winner of Nobel Prize for literature in 2017,is a famous immigrant writer in the contemporary literary circle.During his creative career,Japanese identity makes him get lots of attention. But he hopes to transcend the limits of his identity and write more universal themes.Art and artist theme is one of the important themes in his novels.Kazuo Ishiguro's K(?)nstlerroman have profound and rich connotations, which contain the author's deep thinking on a series of issues such as the relationship between art and history, art and times, and artists and consumer society. As a writer born in the early postwar years,Kazuo Ishiguro cast a strong shadow of the war in his novels.Whether active or passive, artists were involved in the inevitable political tide.Kazuo Ishiguro is aware of the influence of politics on people's daily life,so he doesn't oppose artists' involvement in politics.Instead,he emphasizes artists' social responsibility. However,he has no clear answer to the question of how can artists maintain an appropriate degree in political activities.Having witnessed the sad ending of wrong political opinions suffered by his elder generation,Kazuo Ishiguro takes a pessimistic attitude.Artists in his novels all become political propaganda tools, and eventually fail in both career and family. The era in which he grew up was also an era of the alternation of the old and the new, economy gradually recovered in a generally peaceful atmosphere, people's life became stable, material demand increased rapidly, and cultural products changed from luxuries to necessities.Facing a large number of audiences with huge differences, artists were confronted with the game between public interest and artistic ideal in their creation, and they often choose to compromise under the pressure of livelihood.Artists who once had a lofty and sacred status gradually fell into an identity crisis. The flourishing of consumer culture makes things once regarded as treasures like emotion, morality and even human beings themselves become commodities that can be exchanged.Artists deeply affected by this atmosphere also conduct such transactions frequently in order to attract public attention and gain recognition.Kazuo Ishiguro has a keen times consciousness and pioneer consciousness, while trying to grasp the pulse of the times in the content,he is also eager to innovate the form of novel techniques.Traditional K(?)nstlerroman often contain the theme of growth, and Kazuo Ishiguro's K(?)nstlerroman are the same, but his expression of artists' growth process is creative. He often breaks the linear growth process of the protagonists and arranges several important stages in their lives out of order to highlight the fragmented living experience of artists.Kazuo Ishiguro's novels also reflect obvious spatiality. The rise and fall of artists' career and the resulting emotional ups and downs are often accompanied by the changes of space, and the opposition between spaces reflects the mood differences in different periods. The mode of space construction in the novel can be traced back to the original scenery of the old house in Japan and the new house in England, and artists' spiritual liberation of returning to nature reflects the identity of Kazuo Ishiguro and the latter. In addition, although Kazuo Ishiguro does not show the intention of pursuing the post-modern color, his novels have obvious uncertainty characteristics.Narrators try to construct the image of a gifted artist for himself or his companions, but all kinds of narrative contradictions eventually deconstruct it,and the image of the characters are no longer realistic.Kazuo Ishiguro's K(?)nstlerroman have an inherent contradiction, while artists' existential anxiety reflects author's nostalgia to tradition,he clearly reveals his consciousness of responding to the times and standing on the present. This is a kind of complex mentality of a post-war writer in the social transformation.Although full of helplessness,he understood the irreversible trend of the times and tried his best to respond,so as to maintain the existence and development of literature, art and other spiritual products,as a possible way to resist the contemporary spiritual crisis.
