| The Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad is called a modernist writer.Most of his novels are based on his many years of maritime experience.The modernist features in his novels have always been the focus of attention and discussion in the literatus.The dissertation attempts to explore the modernist and tragic connotations embodied in the protagonists in Conrad’s novels from the perspective of modern tragedy theory research.Through the analysis of the tragic fate and causes of the protagonists in the three representative novels of Heart of Darkness,Jim Lord and Nostromo,it is found that they have obvious modernist characteristics.On this basis,the dissertation attempts to discuss the transition from tradition to modernity of the protagonist during the change of the times.And,through the protagonist’s modernity tragic fate,explore Conrad’s attitude towards the social crisis triggered by Western capitalist ideology.Further elucidate the reflection and enlightenment of the protagonist’s tragedy in Conrad’s novels to contemporary society. |
