| From the perspective of polyphonic narrative theory, this thesis focus on the narrative context and narrative characteristics of Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine and Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. This thesis intends to demonstrate the chorus of characters’ subjective consciousness from the counterpoint of the structure and the relationship between characters at the macro level, and the voice-over and dual sound at the micro level.Based on the polyphonic narration, both works demonstrate the problems of ethnic minorities’ lack of national identity and self-identity under the impact of western mainstream culture: Love Medicine shows the dilemma of native Indians in the conflict and integration between traditional ethnic culture and mainstream American culture; The Joy Luck Club also reveals the contradiction of Chinese immigrants under the collision of Chinese and American culture.Through a contrastive analysis of the dual-dialogue and the chorus of characters’ subjective consciousness, the deep cultural connotation of these two ethnic minority works is excavated, that is,in the context of global multicultural development, the necessity of culture self-confidence and the incompleteness of harmonious coexistence among cultures with wide disparities. |
