The source text selected for this translation practice comes from the second chapter of the academic book Exploring Student Loneliness in Higher Education.The book was written by Lee Oakley,a senior lecturer in linguistics at the University of Portsmouth,UK,and published by Palgrave Macmillan in December 2019.It focuses on the loneliness issue of college students and uses conversational analysis as a tool to explore how students disclose their loneliness.To reproduce the characteristics of academic texts,translators should ensure the objectivity,logic and readability of the translated text,and restore the linguistic characteristics of the original text.This report probes into the translation strategies from three aspects: nominalization structure,sentences with inanimate subject and cohesive devices.For the nominalization structure,the translation methods of translating into Chinese verb-object structure,subject-predicate structure or independent clause are adopted.The translation methods of conversion and substitution are used to translate the sentences with inanimate subject.The key point of it is to transform the inanimate subject into an object or adverbial of Chinese sentences with a proper animate subject.For cohesion devices,three translation methods are adopted: omission,amplification and substitution.Through this translation practice,the author gets a deeper understanding of the translation of academic texts,hoping to provide a reference for the translation of academic texts.
