On The Relationship Between The Sexes In Henry James' Novels

Henry James’ s novels mostly involve international cultural conflicts,the ever-changing relationship between the sexes,the wealth competition in the material society,and the changes in personal character in the social environment.His later three novels,The Wings of the Dove,The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl,describe the process of the establishment of American women’s cultural identity in the 19 th century,and reveal the relationship between the construction of women’s identity consciousness and men’s individual consciousness.This article intends to analyze James’ s later three novels from the perspective of the influence of female consciousness on the relationship between the sexes,the role of personal character establishment in the relationship between the sexes,and the field of consciousness as a new field of literary expression.The first chapter uses the method of textual analysis to explore the sexual relations in James’ works.James’ s female characters in the early and mid-terms often have the characteristics of "American girls" and the influence of the feminist movement.The female characters in the later three novels gradually developed new characteristics of integration: both gentle and pure and kind,but also complicated and deep,not only weighted material,but also intelligent and independent.This change of female role brings about a new kind of sexual relationship,which adds rational factors to the always emotional sexual relationship.This chapter takes the male and female characters in the three later works of James as the object,analyzes the unique features of the sexual relations in James’ works,and discusses the rise and fall between the sexual relations in James’ works and the pure sexual relations.The second chapter discusses the effects of culture and sexual relations on the establishment of individual character and the negative effects on sexual relations after the establishment of individual character.The construction process of James’ characters’ personal character is also the process of their constant revision of personality.By giving way to the author’s perspective and taking the flow of character consciousness as the object of description,James shows the correlation between male and female consciousness and the establishment of personality characteristics.This chapter focuses on the influence of gender relations on character remodeling and the negative effect of the establishment of individual consciousness on gender relations.The third chapter discusses the expression of gender relationship and personality transformation in the field of consciousness from the perspective of psychology.James takes sexual relations and personality transformation in the field of consciousness as the main subject of his writing,expressing his thoughts on American ideas,female consciousness and the active influence of consciousness on the rules of material society.In the background of different culture,this paper discusses the concept of home and nation,and develops the complex aspects of gender relations,family affection,family and individual consciousness development,so as to explore the evolution process of civilization in the formation,transformation and finalization of the character consciousness.James’ later literary texts extended towards the broad field of sociology,psychology,philosophy and aesthetics,and provided abundant linguistic materials for the theoretical concepts of consciousness field,self-consciousness and personality transformation in the field of modern psychology.
