Lucian Freud is the most influential contemporary British realist painter.It is world-famous for its unique style of realistic portraits,especially human portraits.From the early attempts of surrealism to the "existentialist Ingres",to the dramatic changes of style and brushwork in the middle and late period,Freud ignored the judgment of "easel painting is dead" in the 20 th century all his life,and pursued to refresh the real expression of painting on the road of realistic portrait painting.How does this authenticity show up in his work?This paper begins with the influence of the master and contemporary artists on Lucian Freud and the drama in the series of works imitating the master.It also introduces the metaphorical and emotional restraint in Freud’s works,as well as the expression of ordinary life in landscape,plants and still life paintings.Finally,it discusses the consciousness of truth in Freud’s portrait.The article points out his attitude towards painting,in the eagle’s eye gaze,in the constant overthrow and break the imprisonment of self,give the ordinary to the sense of life,in the portrait to convey what the real painting is like.
