| In the 1940 s,the British missionary Alfred James Broomhall and the American missionary Ralph R.Covell successively went to the Yi-inhabited areas and conducted evangelistic missions.According to their own experience and feelings,they respectively wrote a number of works entitled Strong Tower,Strong Man’s Prey and Mission Impossible.Although they have similar identities and motives,and have similar time to enter and live in Yi areas,the images of Yi formed in their respective works are not the same,and even there are contrasts.Interpret the above records of examining,writing and painting Yi,so as to gain insight into the construction rules of the works,grasp the relationship between the text,the author and The Times,and clarify the right and wrong in the texts,so as to capture the discourse power,academic interest and reference value.Therefore,focusing on the works of Alfred James Broomhall and Ralph R.Covell,this paper aims to make a series of questions about what,how,why and what its benefits are the image of Yi in English literature.In the research,the author will take the Imagologie of Comparative Literature as the main theoretical basis,and take the Narratology as the auxiliary,around five aspects include the geographical phenology,ethnic characteristics,behavior of life,social system and spiritual world to construct the image of the Yi,and explore the causes,value and significance of the image of Yi in Alfred James Broomhall’s and Ralph R.Covell’s works.This paper is mainly divided into three parts: Introduction,Text and Conclusion.On the basis of combing the research status,methods and structure,the introduction clarifies the research background and theoretical basis of the image of Yi in English literature.The text includes three chapters.The first chapter traces the origin of Yi,introduces the lives of Alfred James Broomhall and Ralph R.Covell and their works related to the Yi,explains the writing background of their images of Yi,such as writers,works and times.The second chapter combs the content of the Yi in Alfred James Broomhall’s and Ralph R.Covell’s works,so as to outline and extract the image of the Yi in their works;The third chapter analyzes the image of Yi in the two writers’ works and its causes,and makes a comparative view of the writing strategies of the differences.The conclusion further sublimates the cultural value and academic significance of this topic,compares the images of Yi in Alfred James Broomhall’s and Ralph R.Covell’s writings,and moderately investigates the images of Yi created by other Westerners at this time,it not only reveals the synchronic and diachronic characteristics of the images of Yi,but also shows that only by deeply understanding the national image and its writing psychology and strategy under the western discourse,can we understand the formation mechanism of national image,discover the theoretical value behind the image,and more effectively correct our own cultural defects,so as to enhance our cultural confidence and strengthen the image publicity of the country and the nation. |
