As one of the most important and controversial German artists after World War II,Joseph Boyce has many critics analyzing his works of art and personal life experience from various angles and positions for many years. His works are primitive and have a tendency of mysticism, and ancient myths and legends are often used as the basis for material characteristics when talking about the understanding of materials. It is generally believed that this is due to his encounter with the Shamanistic Siberian nomadic Tatars. In his later career,he often used the elements of shamanism, even known as shaman artists. With the deepening of international research on primitive religion, the original shaman culture, once full of mystery, can be proved from a scientific point of view, and the strange phenomena in this social system can also be explained from the anthropological aspect. Therefore, this paper attempts to combine the study of Shaman culture with Boyce's artistic concept,to study how Boyce expands and uses primitive belief culture, and to apply it to artistic creation.Boyce's concept of art is based on his material concept, from his early paper works to his sculpture, behavior art and even social sculpture concept, all come from his unique view of single matter. Therefore, this paper starts from the materials he uses and his interpretation of the materials.Boyce, after the Tatars met, developed an interest in a class of tonal materials, such as grease, felt, honey, rabbits and deer. This interest combines subtle observations of plants and animals in his childhood, allowing him to observe things in two ways. One is from the formation of matter and primitive attributes, the other is from the role of matter in human history, including the relationship with primitive human beings and myths and legends. This makes Boyce's works have a profound sense of history and ancient mystery while having objective materiality.Boyce's view of sculpture also starts from his view of matter, and expands the concept of sculpture, making sculpture into spiritual existence. His later theory of social sculpture covers many fields, such as history, philosophy, politics, anthropology and so on,and thinks that the human mind can also be used as the material of sculpture to change society. At the same time,he also thinks that art is the most revolutionary, and applies his social sculpture theory to the education of art college.Based on his life experience, this paper discusses how he transformed primitive belief into the pillar of his art theory and spirit, and points out that his educational revolution with art as a means has the characteristics similar to the central shaman attachment. Finally, from the point of view of healing,Boyce is very concerned about the healing of materials. The honey, grease and felt he often uses have the characteristics of healing. Some critics point out that Boyce was the "spiritual mentor" of postwar German art.Boyce himself also has special concepts such as Jesus,Shaman,Savior Interest. This section explores how Boyce views the healing of materials and works and applies them to social therapy. At the same time,we study whether shaman healing in primitive belief is related to Boyce's social healing, and whether this method can be applied in contemporary society. This paper discusses the relationship between Boyce and primitive belief from three aspects of Boyce's material view, sculpture view and healing. To study whether Boyce's study, transformation and reuse of ancient human civilization can be reused.
