Great changes had happened in Scandinavia during the 16th century.When Sweden was finally won the victory in the independence war led by Gustav Vasa’.Sweden was passing from a member of Kalmar Union into a modern country.As the forerunner of reformation in Scandinavia during 16th century,many unique features were shown in the reformation and foreign policy of Sweden from Gustav I.As a king of the new country,Gustav I had established the most powerful royalty and his careful management for the country made sure that the reformation could be successful.Just like R.Nisbet Bain was said,as the first king of the new country,Gustav I was indeed the most overworked servant of Sweden.During the 37 years of reformation,Sweden achieved great economic development and wealth accumulation as a modern country.This dissertation consists of three parts.In Chapter 1,the first part briefly described the social situation of Sweden under the union of Kalmar in early 16th.The next part described the youth of Gustav Vasa,which include the experience that he was became a prisoner in Denmark and finally escaped.After Gustav Vasa escaped from the Stockholm massacre made by Christian II,he recruited the army and he had get assistance from Lübeck.Gustav Vasa was elected king and the independent war of Sweden had win the finally victory.Chapter 2 described and analyzed the internal reformation from Gustav Vasa after the war of independence and coronation in three parts.Gustav I’s aim was to consolidate and consummate the state machinery and centralization of the country.In the first part,Gustav I accept the recommendation from Lutherans and assign them to the reformation of religion.The churches of Rome were replaced by the Churches of Sweden and their property was expropriated.The power of Rome Churches was limited by the king and the country.Gustav I firmly establish the royal power which is over the power of Rome Churches.The protestant and national culture would also be booming at the same time.Gustav I’s economic and military policy would be analyzed in the second part.The redistribution and management of land,the development of farming and military,the unique economic community with foreign countries,all of them were essential conditions for the economy of Sweden.The third part was about Gustav I’s regional rules.Gustav I suppressed the local rebellions from the peasantry while he was actively advocating the economy and made sure that they were absolutely controlled by the royal authority.The foundation for the further dominations of the Baltic Sea was also generally laid by the consolidation of royal power.The formation and development of the throne of Sweden were start form Gustav I would also be briefly analyzed.The significance of hereditary of Swedish throne would be surely illustrated.From all of above,the conclusion can be arrived that all the powerful policies made by Gustav I were sure to be effectively for the development of Sweden in 16th century.Chapter 3 described and analyzed the main foreign policy of Gustav I’s in three parts.Lübeck(the Capital of Hanseatic league),Denmark(the former chief of Kalmar Union)and Finland(the dependency of Sweden)were the three regions which used to be the most close and important to Sweden and these three regions would be chosen for analysis the main foreign policy of Sweden under Gustav I.How did Gustav I use these foreign policy to create the most favorable conditions for the development of Sweden would also be displayed in this chapter.The preliminary evaluation of Gustav I’s personal characteristics and the social reality of his reign would be made in the conclusion after the research and analysis.At the same time,with the integration of his policy and gradually understanding of the modern country of Sweden,the conclusion of a country with the characteristics of locality and times could be obtained.The conclusion of Gustav I’and his policy of Sweden can be summarized from the dissertation.As the king of a new era in the history of Sweden,Gustav I’fully demonstrated his forethought and courage of reformation and diplomacy.He assigned Lutherans for his reformation that he could suppress the power of Rome Churches and local insurgency.He focused on development of military industry,and the emergency industries were promoted in Sweden society which was only dominated by agriculture at that time.He won the urgent needs of the stable international environment for the national development by the principle of in the foreign policy.His decision was to build up the highest authority of the throne so that the future of the new Sweden could be firmly linked with the Vasa.
